Quick sunfading questions- what would you do?
« on: March 07, 2013, 02:08:02 PM »
First: I've had a Quackers in my window for going on two months now. I've been warned that she's prone to burning, so I don't want to go to long with her in the light. She's brightened to a beautiful white by now (you know how sometimes the neck plug will look bright white no matter how yellow or brown the pony is outside? It matches now.) But some of the dark brown spots haven't faded at all, and neither has the highlighter and other ink marks on her. Should I be happy that she's overall pretty white and pull her out, or should I try to keep fading the highlighter and brown spots? What would you do?

Second: I have a discoloured Starshine. She came to me with cancerous spots, highlighter and ink marks, and overall yellowing and colour  mismatch. Since she was in such poor condition, I went ahead and covered her in acne cream for a few days. She seems a bit whiter than when I started, but the discolouration is still obvious and the ink marks/dark spots are still there. I've decided to sunfade her. Do you have tips for covering big glitter symbols so the tape doesn't touch it? Trace over it on paper and cut the tape out perfectly? Maybe I just answered my own question...

Bonus question: Anyone have a link to info on touching up glitter? Most of my glitter symbol ponies are missing most or all of their marks. ):

I believe the best idea with glitter symbols is to put two layers of tape on... The NON-sticky side touching the glitter, then tape over that with another piece. If that makes sense. Ha.

That's what I've heard, but when I tried to do that it was so awkward and I ended up with tape covering her entire rump. Is it easier to cover a little of the symbol at a time? Like, cover one ray of her sun with the non-sticky side of the tape, then cover that with tape, and go to the next ray?

If your Quackers hasn't burned by now and is actually whiter, then it seems highly unlikely to me that she'll burn down the line. The spots and ink, however, may need stronger UV exposure (as in, you may need to wait until summer), assuming they'll fade at all.

I'm afraid I have no suggestions for Starshine. Maybe her symbol doesn't need to be covered?

That's a bit of a relief... I guess I'll wait a couple months and put her back in the light.

I did wonder if covering Starshine's symbols was even necessary... Would the glitter fade or something?

Quackers is a tough one - hopefully as she hasn't burned so far she wont given more exposure. But it sounds like you are doing the right thing and monitoring her closely so I agree with Elisto and I would certainly up her exposure to some more hours in the sun. That is probably what the ink marks need. As for the brown marks, they may not fade at all as on Quackers they are most likely to be age marks/cancer. And it could be the same for the pink as it too could be a chemical break down. Unfortunately both of these are a result of the plastic breaking down not surface stains therefore sun fading does not tend to work - it will remove it if the colour has stained the plastic but will not remove the root discolouration.

On Starshine - she is the most notorious sun burner of all MLP! You will need to be super careful with her in the sunlight, especially as she already has age marks which are simply what burning is an extreme case of. You wont need to cover her symbol as the glitter wont fade in the sunlight or, it will over a long period, but its much less susceptible than paint or ink so it will be fine for the time its exposed.

Of course I would pick the sunburniest pony to sunfade. I guess I'll either try acne cream again to brighten her some more, or do some really careful sunfading. Good to know that glitter fading isn't necessarily something to worry about, though. Thanks for the answers!
