Different gens and their issues, what are they?
« on: February 19, 2013, 08:01:51 PM »
I was wondering if any of the foreign varients suffer from the same problems with regrind and cancer? Are they made with the same type of plastic, and how do they stand up to the ravages of time, typically, in comparison to US ponies? (I know they're made in Hong Kong / China for the US market. I also want to know about what types of problems plague each gen of pony? Any observations?

Depending on the pony, yes, some are prone to regrind/cancer :awake: A couple of the Spanish TEs come to mind (Gingerbread and Sweet Stuff). Depending on the country there are other issues too. Many Greeks are prone to symbol bleeding (or eye-paint bleeding to a lesser extent), and green Peruvian hair is notorious for being a frizzy mess. Some Argies get faded symbols rather easily, such as Novia and Truly. Brazilians in general are known for frizzy hair, and from what I've heard Vennies have plastic that picks up marks easily (but don't have tail washers, so they're basically immune to tail rust).

Also I think the mountain poys have some cancer issues ( not foreign but not Canadian or American). I could be wrong though as I don't own any sadly.

Great question! I would also be interested in knowing the different types of plastic used in different gens... like, say, would a G1 Firefly hold up better to age than a G2 cupcake, a G3 desert rose or a G4 twilight. Don't mean to hijack your thread!!! ~ you've just made me curious!

No worries, that's pretty much exactly what I was wondering, too. Like, has anyone seen a G3 with cancer or regrind?

The first part of your question is really more relevant to the Nirvana forum but your last question pertains more to the Corral. :P That's going to be confusing for people to answer unfortunately because its not 100% clear what you need to know.

If you are interested in non HK/China ponies, I ll move this thread to Nirvana. If you are just interested in different generations it can stay here.

Plastic is plastic - it breaks down at different speeds and in different ways depending on how it was manufactured and the life it has lived to date. Yes you will get G3s which are breaking down - the Divine Shines are a case in point - and you will get G1s which have no break down at all. Its obviously just more common the older the plastic and the more exposure to UV/air/dirt/chemicals that the pony has had.

I think this thread kind of morphed a little from the original question to a better, more interesting one. The Nirvanas have such a different look to them, and I've never seen/heard of a G2 with cancer, plus G3's seem to be more immune to regrind...

G1: factory paint flaws -eyes, symbols, factory hair plug flaws, factory porous ponies (resulting in pindot), factory misshaped vinyl/casting flaws, regrind over time, plasticizer loss over time, glue

G2s: eye chips fall out, plasticizer loss, misshaped vinyl/casting flaws, factory paint flaws, factory hair flaws

G3: misshaped vinyl/casting flaws, plasticizer loss, factory paint flaws, factory hair flaws, glue

Some of my childhood G2's have some regrind, but oddly enough none shows signs of mold (I washed/bathed them ALL THE TIME and then covered them in toilet paper to let them dry :P ), pindot mold or cancer. No bleeding symbols either, this might be because G2's are of harder plastic tha  G1s? Some have plasticizer loss, though (around the eyes, appearantly, as my Bubble suddenly had sticky eyes), and like all other generations they can discolour.

I have exactly one G3 pony with cancer, Breezie. (The white pony with the tree on her butt, not the butterfly ones!) It's only a very tiny bit, but it's there. But then, I don't have many G3s compared to some people!
I'll put something here some time

I have heard and seen of G2 and G3 with age marks, highlighter/regrind like marks and/or an over all chemical breakdown.

G2s are a decade and a half younger than many G1, G3s are 2 decades younger than G1, so of course they may not have aged as much or lived as damaging lives as much as earlier ponies. Hence why, while they have chemical breakdown related problems, you dont see anywhere near as many...or at least not yet.

In theory we need to give G3s another couple of decades and judge from there to compare those ponies then with G1s now.

Modern day plastic manufacture has also moved forward in leaps and bounds since the 80s so that also ensures a more stable plastic in toys.
