FF and CF Sets...which should I keep?
« on: February 14, 2013, 07:24:46 PM »
I have a silly problem. I don't really like having duplicates (especially since I don't have a ton of space, although it's not a major issue), but I can't decide if I should consider the various releases of the original ponies duplicates or not since they're not exactly the same. So I was thinking I would just keep one set, but that might be a little complicated.

My childhood ponies, which I'm obviously not going to get rid of, include both FF Butterscotch and CF Blossom. I'm thinking maybe I would keep just a mix of each, depending on which I have in better condition, but I feel bad splitting up sets (though I don't yet have a complete set of either, so...). Also, I know these are so common, I'm not sure I'd even be able to sell any of them, especially if I try to sell the CF ones.

What would you do? Or would you just keep them all?

I had the same dilemna and kept the FF and they are much more valuable and sold the CF set off in and EBay lot however I would also keep a childhood pony as an extra. You'll prob be very sad at some stage if you let her go

Personally I'd keep the concave-footed ponies.  They tend to be prettier, IMO, and are less apt to fall forwards on their noses. :)

Just what I was going to say! Definitely keep those childhood ponies, but IMO, the FF are the wy to go!

I like having them both and personally consider both sets important. I think of them as completely different ponies because they look so different to me. I wouldn't be able to let any of them go.

I agree with everyone, whichever set you decide to keep, keep your childhood ponies as well. I'm also not a fan of doubles and don't keep variants unless they are very different, but I'd make an exception if one of them is my childhood pony :)

I would keep them all.....but I love the original six, so I am biased. Good luck in your decision....but I agree with everyone....don't sell your childhood ponies.

Thanks, like I said I"m absolutely keeping my childhood ponies!

So I guess this raises 2 more questions:
1) How much more are the FF ponies worth compared to the CF? Mine are in nice shape but some of the symbols are faded. The CF ones are almost flawless.
2) My CF Cotton Candy I found at a thrift store with her original ribbon still on her tail, and I hate to separate that if I sell her since they stayed together this long, but I also collect the ribbons, so I'm not sure what to do there.

I didn't find that much of a price difference when I was looking for the collector ponies, though that was a few years ago.  Maybe $5 difference per pony?

The concave footed ponies are actually the harder to find of the two sets in my experience, except for Blossom and Cotton Candy (because they were rereleased in Year 2 with Applejack, Bubbles, etc).

Concave footed ponies were sold on cards in Year 1, but I suspect they were tacked on near the end of the year, meaning most store-bought collector ponies are FFs.   CF collector ponies are quite likely mail orders.

Hmm, interesting. I don't know much about whether mine were store bought or mail order. I got these two in the late 80s as hand-me-downs, and I didn't get all of her ponies. Though the girl also gave me her Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe, which I just learned is most likely the mail order version, so it's possible my Blossom was mail order too.

I certainly have found the FF much harder to find than the CF versions but sometimes I think its the where and when you are looking that makes the difference to how we get on looking for certain ponies. Personally because they are the original MLPs, I would keep the FFs and I also just like them better than the CFs in appearance.

For price the FFs will be more expensive but I agree with LadyM, anywhere from $5-6 extra per pony, sometimes with Minty and Butterscotch hitting higher.

Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

I kept my FF girls when I downsized my collection.  They took me forever to find, where the CC ponies where a dime a dozen.
