Real horse hair for customs
« on: December 28, 2012, 02:36:21 PM »
I'm new to the custom making scene and i was not able to find in the tutorials any info, but is it possible to use actual horse hair for customs? I want the coarseness of natural hair for a custom i want to make but if it wont work i do not want to waste money.

you can re-root with just about anything.
ive used feathers before and there have been customizers in the past who have used real natural hairs for customs.

if you can get ahold of the type of hair you want than go for it

I remember someone did a custom with real horse hair, not sure if I remember the results of it though :(

Real horse hair is very thick and coarse.  It seems to work ok in tails, but manes are pretty unruly.  I know one customizer had a lot of success using hair from her real horse for a custom tail, then using a close nylon color in the mane.

If you are going for a real horse look I would use mohair, it is lighter but will give a very different look then nylon hairs.  Real horse hair is not going to lay or style for a mane.

It's been a while since i made this topic, but why i'm interested in the horse hair is because i want the coarse unruly feeling for a custom i would like to try to make, which is of an "namahage" pony

This is a namahage by the way

In that case I think mohair would still be your best bet!
