Help getting rid of cigarettesmoke
« on: February 06, 2013, 05:16:56 AM »
Me and John got a new couch yesterday, his moms old one. It's beautiful and fit right in with the other one we have in the livingroom. The problem is that it reeks of cigarette smoke. I've never noticed it before when we've been visiting her. She do smoke but only in the kitchen by the stove or outside. Neverever in her livingroom and I've been sitting on that couch at her home several times without noticing it. Hence why we said yes when she asked if we would take it.

But yesterday, in my own home, I couldn't stand sitting in it for more than a few minutes before I felt the stank. I've put bowls with vinegar around it, sprayed it with febreeze and have had scented candles burning beside it. It seems to help a bit, but anyone has anymore ideas of what I can use and do? I really don't want to get rid of it.

Maybe look into getting it steam cleaned? You can rent a steam cleaner or maybe borrow one from a friend. That will take out the smell and clean it so if it has anything on it, it would remove that too. It's the best I can think of. I hope this helps.

i have actuly  had the most luck getting  cigarette smoke out with vinegar. just  spray it  all over it.  and let it  set  for a few hours  outside int eh air..   thenit  should be fine. i had a loveseat that  a roomate had left beehind and  he smoked so it was horrible.. but after a few sprays of it. and i dont mean libralsprays i mean i  used  quite a lot.  but it helped! febreeze isnt really going to do anything to it.

Id second the steam clean--see if that helps.  Its only water so it shouldnt harm the fabric.

Can you unzip the cushions and wash the covers? I've actually washed the foam cushions in the bathtub once...

Do you have a shop vac? most are wet/dry. You just take out the air filter for wet.. I'd spray down the couch with 50/50 water/soap. I use shout (stain remover) for clothes and clothes detergent- namely Oxyclean but don't use liquid dish soap or carpet cleaner they will take forever to come out. If you are worried about soap being left on the couch use a 60/40 water/soap. Then vacuum it off with the shop vac, if you feel a slight soap residue spray with just water and vac again. Works great for cat pee too. I've also toweled dried.

Yep I just checked and I can. The poor cushions inside smelled even worse so I'm considering handwashing them as well. What a project this became!

Aednatia, we don't have one of those and I don't think we'll get one anytime soon. Also we don't have Oxyclean in this country. I'm thinking of spraying it with vinegar until I can book a time for the laundryroom.

I was going to suggest this, and I'm glad you can, Beldarna.  That's what I did when I inhereted furniture from my grandmother, who used to be a chain smoker.

I also inherited a smoker's couch.. I didn't have the luxury of taking it outside to air out.. And it is a very POOFY couch, so the seat cushions were only a small part of the problem. I sprayed it liberally with febreeze daily, and I tucked dryer sheets under every cushion, and into every crevice. It wore out eventually. But it does take a while.
