Thank you all! It is a tremendous relief, especially with the legal troubles he and his mother and their business are facing. In this Bible Belt state, it takes a year of separation to get divorced, and even though I bought the house in my name only, he could have claimed 50% of it, because it was bought during our marriage.

Now because of the way the market is, he would be claiming 50% of a loss, and I would have gotten a lawyer and gone after him for it if I thought he had the means of ever paying me back, or cared about his credit. But he doesn't, and I just wanted him to give me my dogs back so I paid him money he didn't deserve to sign an uncontested separation and give me the dogs. However, I still worried that while we were legally married, someone who is going after his mother or him for business damages in civil court could have gone after my assets as well, since they really don't have any, and these people are (rightfully) out for blood.

I hated my maiden name growing up, and I NEVER thought I'd be so happy to have it back! Right now I am enjoying the peace and quiet, my silly, sleeping dogs, a nice  :wine: , and a long, long sigh of relief.
