Need advice for a "gorey" type custom. (potential gore warning)
« on: January 24, 2013, 02:01:51 PM »
So I'm making a pony based on a character that is missing the top part of her head, severed from the jaw up. I really don't want to actually cut the pony's head up like that... because it's hollow, and I don't want to sculpt the teeth and throat hole and all that mess. but I'm not completely turned off to the idea.

So I thought to just paint the severed part totally black, to just sort of suggest the severed head. But I don't know if that would get my message of the wound across.

your thoughts and/or suggestions?
Also, show me your gore ponies, I'd love some bloody inspiration.

My zombies are all in the link rybett posted :)
So if it were me.... I'd cut that face right off and sculpt all the gooey inside bits. I love the idea of a headless pony with all the inside bits exposed - its creepy, gorey and totally awesome.

Agree! It's a total pain but the end result is so much more satisfying.

I think my concern mostly comes from the character herself. Her wound is kind of stylized. Her head is just missing, and it's all shadowy in the empty head cavity.

Here's a pic of her and her head wound under the spoiler.

she's still got the "aura" of her head, like you can faintly see her eyes and hair.

Seems like a challenge. Somehow making a (semi-) transparent replacement for the top of the head does not sound like a viable option.

Would be awesome, though..

I do see what you are saying.  Have you considered... cutting off the top of the head.  Inserting a section of wire grate and sculpting a thin bit of clay over it to give the concave empty bowl look and then using a piece of whispy fabric for the shadow scalp?  If you used a bit of mesh you could make it headless without having to sculpt all the tiny bits.  I did something similar with my zombie custom so I didn't have to fill the whole head with clay to make it work.

Or not.  You could just go for a more painted look.  I think Eponyart's customs are a perfect example f using very minor sculpting in conjunction with an excellent paint job to get something really masterful without destroying the pony base.
