Unmentioned marks and flaws?
« on: January 10, 2013, 02:33:10 PM »
I bought a Princess Misty on eBay a few days back. (Here's the link to the ended auction.)

The photos on it were very dark, but she looked pretty good, aside from some frizziness at the end of her braids. The seller's description was simply "In good shape no knots in hair"

I got the pony today, and there are marker lines and dots on her leg and neck that were hidden by the darkness of the photos, and since the seller decided not to mention them, I had no way of knowing that she was all marked up.   :(

I've never had to contact a seller about marker flaws before. I've messaged a Chinese seller who sent me a broken anime figure once, but I don't know how to go about this. "Hello, I purchased a pony from you who had unlisted marker flaws that were not visible in the photos"? I'm just not sure what's fair for me to ask or expect here. If you bought a pony listed as "in good shape" and she arrived with marker ink on her, would you ask for any refund? Am I overreacting here?

You might try getting the marks off with a bit of acetone or nail polish remover on a q-tip-  they look like they'd come off pretty easy.

I agree though that it was not cool of the seller to neglect to mention them though, specially in light of the bad photo.

I am sorry your pony was not as expected :(

I know myself when sellers have a crappy picture and make a very vague description, I like to ask questions first.  Because not all sellers are pony collector's and good condition to them is something entirely different from what I think good condition should be.

If you are completely unhappy, I would send her a message.  But be prepared as you will have to return it for a full refund at your expense.  They will not let you keep the pony and receive a refund.

In all honestly though $7+free shipping was a pretty decent price for her even despite the marks.  I would probably keep her and try and remove the marks. But that's just me.

I'll try to get some acetone and clean her up, because I agree that $7 with free shipping isn't bad at all. If the marks don't come off, is a neutral rating appropriate? I was pleased with the shipping, not so pleased with the poor description and such... Is it my own fault for not asking for more details on her?

If those marks are on the surface use magic erasor first. If that doesn't work then the acetone, but be careful with acetone you can smear the mark in more. :)

Yeah, anything vague ask questions. Perhaps since you're considering a neutral message the seller nicely thanking her for the prompt shipping, but letting her know that the marker stains went unmentioned and unphotographed, just to let her know these details are of importance to collectors. Perhaps it will save her from upsetting someone else down the line? Then base your FB on her response.

Similar, I had a lady ship me a large lot and she never secured any of the accessories.... a piece I really wanted slipped out of the box. I was really upset. I let her know about it (not sounding upset. :) ) and she was very apologetic, and thanked me for the tip of using a sandwich bag to secure tiny pieces in the future, so she wouldn't make that mistake again. Her response to my message got her a positive FB, instead of the neutral the upset me that opened a package with stuff missing wanted to leave. I knew if I was the one selling, I'd at least want to know of a problem before FB was placed.

I know it's disappointing to get something not as you were expecting it, but I don't think the seller deserves a neutral unless you have real sure evidence that they were purposely trying to cheat you. If this person isn't a toy collector and is just selling some childhood toys, then "good condition" might truly be what they thought the toy was. (Especially for a toy 20 years old, to non-collectors she probably seems almost good as new!) Yeah the photo is dark but who knows, maybe that is the best they could do with the camera they have?

It's always best to ask if anything like a photo or a description doesn't seem clear enough. If you had asked if there were any visible flaws and she said no, and then you got the pony and it had those marks, then I would think a neutral is warranted.
Thank you Thimble for my amazingly cute avatar!

This is good advice ^^ , and is also something that I've done in the past too when I've been in similar circumstances to you. Its very disappointing to recieve a pony with unmentioned flaws, but many people who are not collectors dont think to mention things like these marks , or know that it is important to collectors.   The pony wasnt a bad price , and its worth restoring her, rather than having to pay to send her back. Sending the seller a polite message   (I like how Fantastic Firefly put it  ^^ always mention something positive about the transaction first , such as fast shipping etc , before talking about the flaws  ) is a good idea before leaving them any feedback , and  they will learn from this experience too (hopefully) :awake:
