Making a tough decision...
« on: December 16, 2012, 02:41:54 AM »
To sell a lot of my ponies.... G3's I'm not worried about they're okay, but they're in a tub and see no need for them. I'm also thinking of selling some G1's. I'm a little hesitant as I love G1's very much, but these guys get no attention and I'm wanting more ponies, but don't have the room. I'm selling my double G4's too.

So may I ask? Has anyone done this and really regretted it? How do you know it's the right thing to do?? :what: I'm scared about selling G1's as I had my facourites thrown out when I was four and be we got over it. I don't want to regret it badly..

hard question - I am selling most of my G2's - those I won't regret - I hate the body style on them - hated when it first came out still hate it - kinda like G4's hate the style on those toys too - so I've felt no need to collect them.

My G3's I'm kinda selling the one's worth selling at this point - several are worth a lot less than I paid for them even MIB - those will sit in the closet for a few more years.

My G1's I've thought about selling them - really I have, but there is no way I ever will.
My friend  a few years ago decided to sell off all her G1's - she's also a collector - kept about 20 from 200 or so... then this year - all of a sudden totally regretted it . - Now she's buying them like crazy again.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

I have sold a few more expensive G1 because I needed the money at that time, and I am still regretting it. With some ponies it isn't easy to get them back.
Good luck with your decision!

I've sold some of my G1s,  due to space, and I don't regret it. But I was pretty careful on keeping the ones I did like.

I actually took it slow though. I had the whole collection sitting out. And I'd look at them all, and figure out which one I liked the least, I'd take it down for a bit. Wait for me to miss it... If I didn't, then I sold it. After it sold, I went to the next one. Slow, but it wasn't like I had a big chunk missing immediately.

What is remaining now is my childhood collection, replacements for my childhood collection that got thrown away, some ponies I wanted as a kid and never hard, a few htf ponies including nirvanas, and some gifts. (I had a hard time getting rid of gifts).

But I think I'm a different collector than a lot of people here. :3 I don't LIKE the thought of tons of ponies, it makes me uncomfortable and unhappy. I kept the ones I cherished, and that's good.

I sold off all of my G3s, all but one of my favorite G4s, and several random G1s which I didn't love. I used banditpony's method! :) I only regret selling one of those G1s and I plan to replace her. Other than that one, I don't even remember who else I sold exactly because they weren't that important to me.

At one point I almost sold my entire collection and I'm SO glad I didn't. After that phase went by, I would have been heartbroken and immensely regretted it all.

I would certainly sell your G3s and doubles first before pulling our your G1s. It'll give you more time and you'll get a feel for what it's like to sell. :)

I think if its a pony you invested time and effort into tracking down then its unlikely you will not have the odd moment or two of regret over time but as long as its just the odd moment or two then hopefully that's ok. I know I still see pictures of Baby Minty and kick myself a little for selling her - but its only ever now and again.

Personally I have found the easiest option is to pack the pony or ponies you are thinking about out of sight [and out of reach even]. If you can go weeks or a couple of months without missing those ponies from your collection and your shelves then you are probably ready to move them on to their new pony home. If you come to miss some of them quickly or over that period then I would reconsider selling other ponies instead. Sometimes we are attached to ponies we really dont realise have sentimental or emotional value until it comes to selling them on.

these comments are all good advice.

what I will add is to say that you might want to pick your "Top 10" group of g1s.  (or top 2, like in my case Chief and Magic Star) and then find homes for the rest here.   I say here because I trust people here!!  I would have never sold some of my G1s on eBay or to random people, but I have to people here.  it makes it easier to part with them, because I know they'll be loved.

The G1's I'm thinking if selling are not in the best condition, i don't feel any real sentimental value. I did what you guys suggested. I can't get rid of anymore unless I'm planning on upgrade. So I guess I'll have a sales thread after I get pc's. :)

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. ^.^

Just wanted to let you know my personal experience. I have seriously regretted selling off my collection in the past. I know you aren't parting with them all, but make sure you are very confident you want to get rid of them.

I collected ponies from age 9 to 13. I had amassed a very large G1 collection. My brother convinced me to sell it to go on a cruise with my family. At 15 when the G3s started showing up in stores, I wanted to get back into collecting and I seriously regretted selling my collection.

The G3 ponies are not bring in much right now. I would hold onto your G1's for right now.

I think banditpony has excellent advice for paring down your ponies - just do it gradually, and with the ones you won't miss.

I have collected on and off for 10 years and I have yet to sell my collection.  There were several times that I thought I would never start collecting again and they were stored away in boxes but for some reason I couldn't bring myself to sell them.  And I am SO GLAD I choose not to sell because all of a sudden I'm super interested again and have really enjoyed going through my collection and doing inventory.

I have collected ponies for quite a few years.......then I did other things and ponies AND the Arena were not even looked at!

Then I thought "Why am I keeping all these ponies???" - so I started selling a few of my Nirvanas.......

Now I have stopped and gone back to collecting again!
'
I don't miss the ones I sold....as now I have discovered Venezeulian ponies......Argentine beauties and so on......
Downsized to upsize! Gave me $ to spend on some new lovelies!

My basic G1s are still all there.......my G3s (which I never really liked) are slowly going !

Don't look back! Make a move and do what you think is best for YOU!
