Integrity Jem dolls have .... flat weird hair. Need styling advice

Okay- so I am not a big fashion doll collector- and I don't style the MH dolls because I like their hair for the most part-

But I recently got those Integrity Jem dolls because I honestly could not resist them.   They are beautiful,well made, details are fabulous- box- great.  BUT the girls all have one serious problem.  BAD HAIR.  Limp, lame and flat.  So so sad!

Take Jem for example:

The hair is really really stiff from that starch or whatever it is that they do to the hair to keep it in place (like the Monster High dolls) -  It also looks NOTHING like this doll:

Any ideas how I can revive the hair?  It is seran- so I know that it is trickier to style than pony hair- but surly someone has figured it out?  I want my dolls to be pretty...  but they have box head!
How do I get her to have the hair style that the prototype doll has?

Doesn't the instruction sheet say spray it with water and teas it with a comb?

Her hair is a gluey mass-  a lot like the Monster High dolls-   there is no WAY that teasing it a bit with a comb will revive it-

I was thinking of washing out the sticky stuff- and maybe setting some curls?  But since it is seran- I think it goes flat pretty fast- so maybe some product too.... but I don't want to damage the hair.  I figured others probably collect Integrity dolls/fashion dolls and might have had some luck with one strategy or the other...

Maybe wash her out and try a little hairspray to hold the style?
