Okay to debox?
« on: December 30, 2012, 03:36:05 PM »
I've been looking for g3 Minty, and a very kind member offered me Winter 3 Minty MIB. I really want this pony with all of her accessories, and obviously an MIB one will have them. I was hoping to find her loose with accessories, but the price is extremely reasonable.
So my dilema is, would it be alright to debox her if I buy her? I'm not an MIB collector, mostly because I like playing with the ponies and styling their hair. Is she very sought after? I'd hate to debox her only to find out that there are people who are looking for MIB ones...

What if you got her mint in box, and an extra pony loose to play with, with out the accessories?

The problem is that I'm really not interested in having her MIB, you know? Like I'd either get this one and debox it, or wait to find one NIB with accessories.
Because there is no way I could handle keeping a pony in a package without getting twitchy  :P

Lol! I'm the same way. Personally I'd hold out for the loose one.

I understand the preference of people not to debox - these ponies are of course not being sold retail again. But that being said - she is relatively easy to find and because of the number of collectors who have her MIB I dont think she is going to suddenly be rare.

If you are worried perhaps you could purchase the MIB and then once you have her offer her for trade in exchange to someone who wants the MIB but has her loose and complete already? If you have no luck on that front then you will probably feel ok to debox her.

What she said, I am inclined to get things MIB though.  But basically what you are comfortable with.  You could always ask who is selling it to you if they would mind if you opened it.  Some folks get upset if you do.

The seller said that they'd be fine with it, actually. I just got worried that if I did debox her, she would turn out to be some sought after pony. I don't really know much about g3 value/ rarity, so I thought I should probably double check before I broke out the scissors.

M opinion might be a little bias since I have been searching for a G3 Winter Minty MIB!  Half my G3 collection is MIB and the other half loose.  Some sets I like to complete MIB, especially sets with a ton of accessories, because I hate trying to hunt down each little piece to complete them.  So I do understand your pain there.

If you were to get her, she would be your pony and you do with her as you wish. :)

Personally though, as has been said before, G3s really aren't that uncommon to find MIB so I think you're safe. Think of it this way- in the '80s when G1 was out, they weren't thought of as collector's items, just as toys. Therefore, keeping them mint wasn't really seen as necessary so that's why it's harder to find MOC G1s. But by the time G3 rolled around, there were plenty of collectors, so plenty of them ended up staying in their boxes.

I think you're fine. :) I found a Sew-and-Sew MIB at a yard sale this summer and normally would not have deboxed her, except that the box was in horrible shape. On the bright side, I got one very minty pony with all of her accessories and I don't feel an ounce of shame about taking her out at all!

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I'm leaning towards getting her and deboxing her, then, unless anyone has a good arguement otherwise!

I say if you really want her and that's what you want to do with her, go for it. ^^ The seller said they were fine with it, and she would be -your- pony to do whatever you want with. Plus, I don't think G3, especially Minty, one of the more popular ones, will become rare anytime soon. xD

She would be your pony to do what you want with. I pretty much agree with everything everyone else has said.

I'm an avid deboxer myself, so I feel your dilemma!

I'd say if the seller has said it's ok, then debox her. Like others have said, it's not especially hard to find G3s MIB.

Go for it! You can't worry about "affecting value" worry about what makes you happy and if holding a pony makes you happy then don't hold back - Minty needs love!!
