Doll collectors! I have a question
« on: December 15, 2012, 07:21:03 PM »
I have a question for all the various doll collectors.

I have a friend who is amazing when it comes to making doll clothes (or really clothes in general) Perfect example - a couple weeks ago I was talking to her about making me a dream/fairy coat. Today I got these pics in a mail. She was just fooling around and whipped one up for a doll. She makes this stuff all the time! She's tried to sell some of it on her regular website (which is mainly wire art) And has zero luck.

My question is this; Is there a market/forum for this kind of thing? Custom doll clothes? And where would she have luck? She can make anything just by looking at a picture, and for any type of doll. Seems a shame for it all to simply sit.

There's a huge market for doll clothes! Etsy is a good place, and the Dollhouse here might bring in some business too.

Thanks you two. I didn't realize people sold things like doll clothes here. I know she would do custom orders too. She has tried etsy and had no luck. It perplexes me! She even makes doll tea sets and such. The woman should be rich LOL but she's not. She always afraid of taking adventage of people and so she does a lot for free. Do you think there would be a lot of interest at the Dollhouse? I just dont want to point her somewhere and have it be a deadend  :lookround:

If she's not having any luck on Etsy it could be due to prices, quality, sizes, feedback, and photo quality. Plus just lack of advertising. I'd suggest posting on Tumblr in the BJD, Pullip, etc tags when she puts something up for sale. I can't speak for others, but that's gotten a lot of items and shops on my favorites list on Etsy (and I'd be buying if I had the money, lol).

As far as "a lot of interest" goes, really it depends on everything I mentioned. I know I would be interested, but price is a huge factor for me and I'd be a bit wary of ordering from anyone with zero feedback. Why don't you have your friend join and start posting to see about interest?

Specific tags on Etsy help a lot. I always search based on which doll(s) I am shopping for. So if she tags her listings with specific dolls that the clothes will fit, that helps a lot.

I also agree about posting to Tumblr or going around here. I don't really know if she could post her sales on DoA since I don't know what kind of dolls she's been making clothes for. But that's another place to try.

I agree with everyone  ^.^ Joining dolly communities like forums or Tumblr tags is the best way to get known. For Etsy, polished photos and really good SEO (search engine optimization) via specific tags and keyword-phrased titles are really important, the most wonderful stuff just won't get found or looked at otherwise! I think there is definitely a large market for handmade dolly clothes out there--best of luck to your friend!

Thanks all! I really appreciate the feedback. I will talk to her about her tagging methods. I know the issue isn't prices. Most of this stuff she tries selling for under $5
