Loose Limbs
« on: December 09, 2012, 07:54:14 AM »
Is there any sort of do it yourself fix for limbs that are a little bit loose? Id hate to return a doll just because a limb is a little bit loose, but at the same time.. :(

I guess it depends on which limb, my Drac's legs are like wet noodles, and she never will sit up without assistance, but I love her all the same.

It depends on the limbs really. If its the hips and they are elastic strung, I have seen and heard of people restringing the elastic in the hips. If they are the new plastic hips as well as the knees or arms I have heard of people using I believe clear nail polish? (Correct me if I'm wrong someone!) The nail polish creates friction and makes it harder for the joints to flop around. I personally haven't done either. I have a few dolls (like sig. Ghoulia) who I find better put them on a stand and not mess with them rather then try to fix them and mess them up since they're rather pricey to rebuy.

I would say depending on which joints are loose and how difficult it would be to find your doll again if may be worth it to just return it and make sure to let the associate know the doll shouldn't be resold the way it is, otherwise its more then likely it will go back out to the sales floor.

Hm This is the Werecat twins. They both have loose elbows. Im afraid that if I take them back, I will get one that is just as bad, or worse >.> Also, I <3 Fashion Abbet. Also her elbow.

I suppose you could try using some nail polish in the joint and see if that helps. I have only had issues with the old elastic hips and then a couple with loose legs. Out of the almost 100 that I have I guess I must be lucky because I haven't had too many dolls with issues. I would wait and see what others say about fixing the joints before using nail polish though, just in case there's a better idea.

dotd is on the right obviously :p i didnt really let it bother me but since its now going to be for a custom (bad hair glue forced her into this T.T) id rather not have to sell her and add on "sorry arms might fall off" xD

Here is what I've read to do, if it is something like an elbow joint.

Take the lower arm out of the doll. Get some petroleum jelly or something similar [I used an old thing of chapstick], and coat the peg of the limb in that substance. Then, fill the void in the elbow joint with something like superglue or hot glue [I chose hot glue]. Put the lubricated peg in the joint and wait for the glue to set. The petroleum jelly allows for rotation or removal of the limb, but the glue fills the voids that are causing the looseness.

I didn't use this on joints, I used it on Phoebe's back when I had to drill for her wings. I made the holes a little too big, and the insides didn't fit so well, so I used this method for the pegs for her wings. I have had no problem removing these pegs even after pouring glue in there :)

Raye, that's an amazing solution!!

I bet hot glue as you used is much better than superglue. Superglue will dry out and discolor plastic... It's also much too runny to fill in the extra space, I bet!

Yeah, I used hot glue, and I'm not experienced in super glue, so I didn't want to leave it out, but this makes sense.

With the joints you can pop out (hands/forearms) you can pop them out and cover the post with Pledge floor wax with Future shine, it's water soluble so you can always wash it off.

Anyway, what you do is cover the post with just a little bit (enough to coat.. usually do it with a Q-Tip) and leave it be for 24 hours. Don't place it back together, just leave them limbless! It should add just enough bulk that it shouldn't be too loose anymore. My fiance uses this ALL the time on all of our toys (all different types, though I haven't used it on MH dolls becuase well.. the joints that I have floppy I can't remove...), so I can definitely vouch for its safety.

I put a couple coats of clear polish on my Deuce's right arm (it would fall out if you even *looked* at him) and have had no problems since. Bonus is I can still pose his arm or even remove it if I want to:)

So many great ideas. Unfortunately I have none of the supplies on hand for any of it right now lol! I may need to grab a bottle of clear nail polish, thought this really is a good excuse to buy a hot glue gun. I always wish I have one but never go buy it. Hmm
