Painting a monster high face.
« on: December 07, 2012, 08:42:09 AM »
Okay, this doll I've been working on since forever, I've finally painted her eye lashes. Her hair is going to be a dark pink. So I've some her eye lashes that way, or should I just make them black? I've noticed no matter what the dolls hair colour is, the eyelashes is always black. Is this a rule to follow? Or is it because it just stands out and looks better?

Eyelashes, or eye brows?

Most people have dark eyelashes. Some people with extremely fair complexion can have lighter lashes as well, but in general most lashes are brown or black.

Eyebrows can be different according to hair color - it's more likely that you will have lighter brows if you have blonde hair, or eddish brows if you're a redhead. But not necessarily true. I've always had super dark brows and my natural hair color was blonde for a long time.

When it comes to dolls, I always do with black lashes, but I have been known to match brows to hair color.

I think that is a case of people just always have black eyelashes.. So the dolls do too. Would you be able to try them out in pink and redo it if you dont' like it? Or would that ruin a lot of work? If it wouldn't work, perhaps you can take a picture of her, then photoshop some pink lashes in to see if you like the color.

I am doing eyelashes at the moment, but I will match the brows to her hair that's for sure,  I am painting them onto a draculaura so her skin is still pink. So it'll be a dark reddy pink, onto  her light pink skin. Her eyes will be a greeny blue. I was hoping to compliment the eyes, but if it's normal to go black then I'll do it, or at least have it a pinky/red black.

Black is sort of a "beauty" standard, so a lot of people with fair hair/complexions still tend to have black lashes (usually because they use mascara). If you're going for a made-up face I'd do them black, otherwise a pink that's one or two shades darker than her haircolour would work.

That custom is lovely~! Black is definitely a standard, but I deviate from it all the time as I like the effect. Just make sure the color you pick is relatively dark or else it will look strange.

I just did a pony in a monochromatic pink scheme, including her eyes. Definitely the right choice!

Okay I got the base of it down, just need to fix the eye whites. feels a little too plain... How do I add highlights to the lashes? just to give it some colour so it's not so flat?

Just go lighter or darker within that color scheme :) OR! Do a complimentary color! The custom posted does that and notice the effect is quite lovely. yellow-purple, green-red, blue-orange

Are you using paint? You could always do a light dusting with ground up pastel or colored pencil and go over it. Like real eye shadow
