I have Cupcake, too.  I actually think it makes more sense than Sugarcup, but that's just me.

If she was released in the US by the name Sugarcup, it would have had to be very limited and regional. I preordered them, so I should have received one of the earliest made batches (in theory), but all of the ones I got were named "Cupcake."
Thanks to Calico Star for my siggy! <3 (deleted cause photobucket)

It was really early on and I only remember a couple of people saying they found her that way - the post is on this page...http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,296088.msg275039.html#msg275039

Not anything else in G4 that I can think of off the top of my head but in G1 quite a few names changed as they crossed the Atlantic to Europe and Aus. We have Trucker instead of 4 Speed, Tug instead of Salty, Tracks instead of Steamer, Strawberry Fair instead of Sugarberry, Butter Kiss instead of Swirly Whirl, Cherry Berry [does that sound familiar!] instead of Crunch Berry, Sailaway instead of Hula Hula, Rainbow Rider instead of Steaky...and many more.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Maybe she was renamed Cupcake in the U.S. for the demographics sake. Kids (or, um, little girls specifically) would probably be more willing to buy a pony named Cupcake than if she was Sugarcup.

Cupcake, here. Typically, from what I've seen in US distribution, the West Coast (Cali, Washinton, ect) and the North/North East -seem- to get things first or around the same time and then it trickles down. Now I'm curious to know where "Sugar Cup" in the US was found....
