Deodorizing a room
« on: December 03, 2012, 05:10:09 PM »
I work in a restaurant/kitchen and I tend to bring various...odors home with me.  My work clothes promptly go in the laundry room and get washed at the end of the week, but my work shoes stay in my room.  No matter what I do, my bedroom (where I spend most of my time) smells like a mixture of cheese and rancid veggies.  We have hardwood floors, but I have two rugs in my room.  I also keep my room fairly clean (as clean as I can when I spend almost every waking moment in here).

Plug-Ins help for a little while but they do fade after about a month and a half.  Leaving my window open isn't an option as I live in a shady area of town.  Would leaving my shoes on the back porch to air out help?  Any suggestions?

Kitty litter! Baking soda. Both of those items left out will help trap smells Pinesol the hardwood floors or clean them with a fresh scent. Febreeze your pillows, rugs etc. get one of those gel deodorizers that "suck" the bad smells out. You can get them from Target etc. they have gel beads. maybe even wipe your shoes down. I love Febreeze mr. Clean spray.

I know baking soda deodorizes well.  I use it to de-stinkify my rugs sometimes.  And when you say "gel deodorizers" are you talking about those things that come in cans that look like cans of cat food?  California Scents or whatever their name is?

I used to spend a lot of time in a lab- then a hospital-  so I do know what you mean by funky smells.  I would dump my clothes right into the laundry, and leave my shoes in the laundry room or the car-  or if I had to bring them in, I'd put them in a bag.   It always seemed somewhat pointless to get the smell out when I was just going back the next day-

THat said there are lots of things (recommended above) that might help with the odor- I think baking soda works wonders and is also very cheap- but I would definitely keep them on the back porch and not your room-

Do they still make those boxes of baking soda that have the little...vent thing in the side of the box so it can be used to deodorize?  I know we kept one in our fridge years ago...

At Home Depot, there are these large sachets with what looks like rocks in them.  They're closet deodorizers and they work wonders.  I kept them in my son's room when he was still in diapers (I did cloth) and you could never smell a thing.

I think I'm going to give baking soda a try for now.  Since we don't have the box with the side vent, should I just pour it in a dish and put it on a shelf where my cat can't get to it?

Nah, you can just leave it open. The box itself.

...get a plastic tub with lid that SEALS ... i mean .. GOOD seal, not half butted kind of seal ... shoes go in there with their own container of baking soda ... baking soda and febreeze the crap out of your room ... smells will get into EVERYTHING ... yes ... even into hardwood floors ...

... i sprinkled some baking soda down, let it sit for awhile ont eh floor, vaccuumed/swept up what i could and used a swiffer wet jet (YAY SWIFFERS I LOVES YOU SOOOOOOO!) lol

but a good container for your shoes is a great way to start so you don't have to leave the shoes outside ... and they make odor eaters (LOVE those suckers too lol) and sprays for your shoes as well ... lots of stuff ... but their own container with their own baking soda ... is a good way to start ... gets the odor at the source and loks it in there to focus the destinking

I took the entire day and deep cleaned my room.  I went through an entire box of baking soda using some on the hardwood floors, my rugs, and I put some in a decorative dish on my bookshelf.  I've noticed a major difference already!
