Fitting Barbie clothes to MH dolls?
« on: October 09, 2012, 11:56:27 AM »
Has anyone successfully refitted Barbie clothes to fit MH before? If so, how difficult is it? I'm attempting it, but I'm wondering if I'm in way over my head here or not. I found three Barbie dresses I had that would look great on my MH dolls if I can get them to fit properly. So far, though, all I've done is turned the clothes inside out and marked them where I need to take them in to fit the dolls. But before I go any farther, I wanted to see if anyone had any tips for doing this, and also I'd like to see pics because I'm curious if this can even be done with the clothes still looking good in the end.

I've decided it doesn't really matter what they look like in the back, so my plan is to pull them back until they look good from the front, then pin them in place and mark where I need to sew the seam. I have no sewing experience at all, but my mom's pretty good so she said she'll show me how to hand sew them. The first one I'm doing is out of stretchy fabric so I don't have to bother with snaps or velcro, but I'll need to on the other two. The first one I'm doing is this pretty blue dress with pink roses printed on it and it's glittery. Rochelle looks super cute in it.

i feel like a pro at this, you were right to turn it inside out, pin (you really don't want to mark/stain the fabric), and (i do it on the doll, you can take it off, use the pins as guidelines... i really eyeball it) sew. if o\it has a velcro on the back you want to pinch it at the side and at the darts in the front (booby area). i usually taper the sides off to wherever the waist of the barbie  garment is. i then cut the excess and use a lighter to cauterized the edges. i would wait to cut until after you turn it over an look at the fit right side out- the extra fabric really doesn't alter the look too much- it'll look less lumpy lol don't forget to hem your edges or the wear and tear will unravel your clothes.

(grin) KissTheThunder, we altered the same dress !

I actually bought this to alter it for Clawdeen ! But I had to downsize my dolls, so most of my alterations came from digging through the clothes I already had for Barbie - or yard sales.

Didja know that Barbie pants/jeans mostly fit the MH male dolls ? I often adjust the Velcro (tm) for a better fit, but the length is usually good.

I'm doing the same thing everyone else is - put the outfit on the doll, pinch to fit, then turn it inside out to pin-fit, then mark the lines (I use a chalk pencil) and sew. My first few were rather clumsy, but ya gotta start somewhere ! Of course, that attitude's probably why I have more seam rippers than scissors....

ShortyBoo, I can't wait to see what you do !
