Any tips on how to remove the head from one and any tips for a first time rerooter?

mine just pulled off with a bit of strength otherwise you could boil and then pull off to loosen the plastic

Yup, yanked off here too.  Re-rooted with the tool, broke 3 needles in the process.  Partially user error, partially hard headed pony.  ;)  Took 3 hanks of DH to do, but if I had gone shorter, maybe 2.5?

In the process of trying to get all the hair out. Boyfriend actually took over...ha! He's turning into quite the customizer. We're having difficulty with the pliers. None are long or skinny enough to get up in there.

Hemostats.  And lots of hot water.  Or, water and a flat end screwdriver.  Scrape the glue off, the hair follows.

He's oddly supportive for being openly 'anti-pony'. He's a buttface. I'll definitely post pics when I'm done.

I've customized one of these before. To get the hair in the very top, I pushed it out of the hole using a thumbtack. (Actually, I do that on most G3s when I can't get them with hemostats, LOL.) Good luck!
