Ebay & Paypal: Anyone have this happen to you?
« on: October 17, 2012, 01:33:05 PM »
I just bought some ponies on Ebay. I went to pay and clicked on the enter button. And then the transaction was done!

THe right hand corner said I was paying by Paypal and I thought okay. But I wasn't taken to Paypal and I wasn't able to choose my payment method. I didn't even have to login to ebay again or paypal.

So, I was bothered by the fact that through this whole transaction, I wasn't asked to log into Ebay again or Paypal. The transaction action just went through to the end in one click. I'm used to having to login again. I liked those safeguards along the way. Prevents accidental purchases or others making purchases.

I realize that Ebay and Paypal did some sort of combo to make transactions smoother but this was a little too easy.

Can I turn off this option or opt out?

Thanks in advance!

I believe they are just rolling out this "two-click" checkout (that's what they are calling it). And only certain one's are seeing it now but it will be available for almost all buyers by the end of the month.

I think they are offering the "two-click" checkout largely due to the fact that eBay is (finally) allowing people to link their PayPal and eBay accounts, so they don't need to in effect leave one system and enter another in order to pay for a purchase.

I just paid for some items the other day and did not have to go through it.  So I can't tell give you my personal opinion on how I feel about it.

This to me is a bad move on ebays part. Here is why...if someone hacks into your ebay account they can buy a bunch of stuff and pay for it with your paypal account and possibly even change the address on your account with them all linked like that. I don't like it and it may end up causing me to just close down my ebay account if there is no option to turn it off.

Yes, this is exactly what I was thinking. I'll investigate more.

Here's what I found at ebay.

Go to your My Ebay page.
Top left there is a tab that says Account. Click the Account tab.
Left side of the page there is a menu called My Account. Click Paypal account.
There is an option that says:
What else can you do?

View and update your PayPal user preferences on eBay.
Your eBay account is linked with your Paypal account: *****@********.com  Remove link. <-----
(Removing this link will make it more difficult to buy items from sellers who require confirmed PayPal accounts).

I did this so we'll see what happens next time.

It randomly offered me to link them but I declined. I'm not even sure why but maybe this is a reason. Haha, or maybe when anything changes even slightly I get scared off.

But in any case it sounds like it is becoming automatic now to have them linked?

Teresat - Hum, how can it be "more difficult"? You can either click "buyitnow" or not? Weird...

Yes, I'm interested to know the additional difficulties myself. Just waiting for that BIN pony to test this on; do they mean "confirmed" address or cc or bank? I mean a Paypal account either exists or it doesn't!

In all honestly it was not put in place to be more difficult.  They are just keeping up with what buyers want and that was a fast and easy checkout.

And from the reading I did on it the only complaint I am seeing is that folks claim when they made payment it sent it as an E-Check.  I guess time will tell though if there are any other problems.  There always are when they first roll something out. Anyways I myself do not have an issue with it so it's not going to bother me to much when they make it available for everyone.

This is what irritated me the most. I couldn't choose the payment method. We'll just have to see how it goes! :)

Yeah, I do sometimes wonder how many non-paying bidders are people who thought they paid but actually didn't. You know, people who thought clicking "confirm" four times was enough and didn't realize they had to do it one more time.

Hopefully it will cut down on NPB's?  I don't always understand Ebay's methods...

hmm...  that all sounds somewhat weird to me

i use ebay to buy stuff for my business, not just ponies, and for that reason i have two different credit cards in paypal so i can use the business card for business and my 'everyday' card for ponies and non-business stuff.  how on earth am i gonna be able to differentiate bewteen business and everyday if that option isnt even there *concerned*

So I used ebay today. I paid for my item. I unlinked the accounts earlier following the directions as stated above. I still didn't have to login to Paypal but this time it did let me choose the payment method. So now I'm not sure if I unlinked or not. Ughhh....I'll have to check again later.

It shoudl be able to turn off and on. I had it off for a while and I had to log into PP every time. I have them linked currently, as I swore I had paid for items that apparently I hadn't clicked "yes" enough times to pay for them. Now if only etsy would do a similar system...
