De-tinseling? (Just a quick question!)
« on: September 29, 2012, 07:25:14 PM »
I found a lovely Waterfire, but the tinsel in his mane and tail drives me crazy! When people talk about de-tinseling a pony, is anything more involved than just plucking the tinsel out with tweezers? If I do that, will I somehow be ruining the pony?
I'll put something here some time

I de-tinselled my Waterfire via just plucking all the tinsel out.

Yup, I took out some of the tinsel on some of my G3 babies, and it really was as simple as plucking with tweezers :) Just make sure the tips of the tweezers don't accidentally get the pony since you might make a dent in the plastic, but that's pretty easy to avoid. Otherwise the whole process is mostly time consuming, but not particularly difficult  ^.^ I was worried too when I first de-tinseled one of my ponies, but after just a few plucks you'll see you're not going to damage the pony by this.

Thanks guys! It is pretty easy, as long as I put something on to watch/listen to while I work.
Should I carve "DT" into the hoof or something when I'm done, do you think? I'm planning on keeping Waterfire for a good while yet, but even now I get weird and worry that some poor collector years from now is going to get ripped off because someone is selling my pony as a rare factory defect or something...maybe I'm a bit paranoid.  :P

Aww, I think Waterfire has nice tinsel, unlike most G3s, her tinsel makes her hair look more firey. :c

Yeah tinselling is pretty simple with tweezers, it's quite an involved process and you might need to go back to deal with any tiny bits that are left behind.
De-tinsling a G3 usually isn't a problem since most G3's are pretty common so it shouldn't hurt the value too much, if you're just planning on keeping Waterfire for yourself then go ahead. :)

I believe I used tweezers when I detinseled a pony before. It is a rather long process, especially if you want to make sure to get every single piece of tinsel out. Just be sure to grab the tinsel as close to the head as possible and give it a good hard pull.

I think one time I heard of someone parting the pony's hair and putting all the tinsel together, and then taking an exacto knife and cutting out all the tinsel as close to the head as possible, and then pulling out the remains with tweezers.

Yup - delicacy, patience and tweezers are the only way I know of.

Yes, you are in theory devaluing her as you are changing her original form however, as she is only worth a few dollars its not a significant amount :) If you are changing her and intend to potentially sell her, I would add a note under her hoof of the change as well so future owners are always aware of the change.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
