How to be a dolly cheepscate
« on: October 23, 2012, 12:56:16 PM »
" $9 for one  outfit!? $25 for a CAM set? $7 for a wig?!" this is normally the stuff you'll here me say as I walk down the to isle  now granted really the prices aren't to bad if you buy one thing here and there sure but I want to be honest I'm cheep!

Not only that I'm on a tight budget so money for things like Dolls and ponies dosen't come along often and let's face it these plastic gals can be expensive! especially if you buy online or in retail stores.

I keep my doll buying limited to the arena, and flea markets I make nearly all my MH doll clothes or buy the less expensive barbie sized ones and alter them. Did you know that one MH or Novi stars fashion pack has only one outfit  while one Barbie fashion pack usually has two or three outfits and they can be altered to fit with only a little sewing or some inexpensive velcro squares. Wigs are surprising not that hard to make I found several tutorials on you tube.

So what do you guys do to keep your doll costs down? are you 'cheep' about your doll spending habits?

I make a bunch of clothes for my dolls and one little trick I have discovered is recycling old clothes to make them clothes. A pretty patterned shirt from the thrift store might be less expensive then if I would buy fabric and I can usually make more than one thing from it.

I buy lots of second hand things from friends, or at BJD meets. I've got clothes for a couple of dollars and urethane eyes for $10. I also make heaps of clothes and accessories.

Though by far my best deal has to be the Souldoll Eliot I'm buying. He's like new and I'm getting him for $150 less than he would cost direct from the company, and I don't have to pay shipping because he's local.

this is another thing I do XD I just buy cheap dolls.
I've been on a 300$ lucky streak the past several months XD  Dream of Doll E-An, Luts SDF Abadon, and Zaoll Luv (with custom dollmore face up and free shipping) all about 600$ value each, I've been able to snag for 300... I'd hope to keep this up.... but I'm not getting my hopes up XD

All of my cheap purchases are impulse buys, sometimes they're dolls I've been wanting, other times they're just 100% impulse. But I've never regretted a single one, and I've almost always made profit when selling an impulse that didn't fit in.

You get the best deals Knibitz! I suppose it's a factor of right time, right place.

in regards to clothing, my dolls do a lot of sharing! I don't permanently alter many of my clothes, I use things like safety pins or extra velcro. That way my dolls can share! I have some items that my monster high, pullip, and hujoo kitty have all been able to wear :)

It's kind of geared to children but maybe you'll find My Froggy Stuff useful? I've got a couple tutus made with her tutorial, a partially finished blender and some ideas from it.
