Help me with... Sculpted Hair terror?
« on: August 28, 2012, 06:42:19 PM »
I'm working on what's looking to be a whopper of a set of customs (mostly for personal amusement) but since three or four of the characters have super short hair, I'm debating using sculpted hair for those few! Only... I'm a little afraid to do so. I generally use sculpey for my projects, and as I want this to be as accurate as I can get it, I'm a little worried I won;t be able to pull it off well with just regular hair.

I just wonder, I prefer the look and feel of real manes, but don't know if I could make the characters look 'right' with my standard nylon hair.

FYI, the character set is going to be the Avengers from the recent Movie... Loki, Natasha, and Thor are gonna have fabulous manes, but most of the rest are males with really short hair...or no hair.

Does anyone have any advice/tips on either making hairstyles for ponies look good when based off things like that, or on sculpting hair to match properly? Or... fudgeit, even advice/recommendations on which avenue I should pursue?

I'd also love opinions on styling even longer hairstyles into...I don't know. Slicked back looks, or really short, tight curls? I'm going to have a lot of work to do here, wow.

EDIT
Also anyone have ANY clues to color-match Thor's hair?

A few tips I have seen come up:

~For curly hair, we have a tutorial for boil curls, the hotter the water, the longer the curls set.
~Nylon is the easiest type of hair to work into different styles.
~The shorter the hair style, the more plugs you will want to put in to keep the pony from looking half finished.

I know there are a ton of other tips out there!

Well, I've done a couple of ponies based oh humans (or close enough) with short hair, and went with sculpted hair. They just wouldn't have worked with real hair.

I know others have done short hair using nylon, but it really depends on the style. I don't think I could have pulled off Superman's little curl with nylon hair, for example.
