i just got an airbrush *woohoo* ... question
« on: August 19, 2012, 10:52:22 AM »
I was just wondering about some painting questions for all you airbrushers out there :)

There is a custom i want to make but it has sculpting and requires a fbr in black, would you sculpt onto the pony and then spray and the go through the torture of painting on top of black or would you sculpt onto the paint, which to me sounds like a bad idea...orr sculpt and just do a fbr with a paintbrush haha

also just in general would you sculpt before you spray or spray before you sculpt (I realise this is like the same question as above but i'm wondering for other colours)

From what I heard and have seen, most people sculpt then paint because the sculpting material adheres to the ponys body easier. If you paint first, it can only stick to the paint and it could flake off.

Because of how nice and even the airbrush paints, definitely sculpting and then painting....  It's one of the best reasons to use an airbrush.  (if I'm following your plans correctly).  The coverage you can get with an airbrush is really superior to any other sort of painting.

If there are bits that you do not want to be black, you can mask them off with masking tape and bags before painting. Just depends on how big they are.

Ohh i never thought of masking them off, i will probobly try that, some of the bits are quite small but i can always touch them up with a brush.

If the areas you want to mask are small you can use masking liquid :). There's always a way to keep an area from being painted

Yep....I used to use it to mask off eyes that I didn't want to repaint all the time so it definitely sticks to factory painted areas like that..but I also used it on unpainted areas on a project or two.
