Advice on selecting a hair material?
« on: August 02, 2012, 06:55:07 AM »
So I'm getting back into the customizing game, and treading lightly.

I'm already stumped with what kind of hair to buy...
The first time I made customs was 7 years ago.
I picked some kind of hair that was silky, but stuck almost straight up! It could be boiled straight - but it drove me mad o_o
I don't want to accidentally buy that again XD

I'm looking at hair options on dollyhair, so does anyone have advice?

I'm wanting hair that is light and just falls into place, nothing that's stiff.

I'm looking at Saran hair and Genuine mlp nylon hair.

which would you recommend, are these going to behave rather nicely?
Do you have any customs using these types of hair?

I recommend genuine MLP hair from Dollyhair. It falls nicely into place as long as you don't make over sized plugs. And if you do, then it lays down well enough with some water.

Saran hair can look nice and straight if you leave it long, but if it does stick up, good luck getting it to lay down. It doesn't style very well.

:) hmmm... options options!

XD OMG I don't understand how you people do this LOL I am dizzy with the color options :O  What in the world is going to look good together!?

I'm thinking a mixed hank of daquiri ice and bobby blue
and then a hank of starlight for a few plugs of sparklies.

Starlight and sunlight blended in subtly really do give very pretty sparkles!

We sell nylon as well (click on my link for my shop) as everyone has said Nylon is the best for curly styles and is the same as pony hair, for long straight styles Saran is the best :D

ETA: Our Nylon is the same as Dollyhair's :D

I can take a picture of the both the hair colours next to each other if you would like to get an idea of what they would look like together?

If you go to the My Little Customs facebook page, we have lot's of pictures there using both Saran and Nylon if that's any help? We also do blends if you need any done :)

Definitely recommend the nylon!  It's easier to style in my opinion.  Saran can sometimes feel much silkier, which I loved, and while I never had issues with it sticking up (granted, I've only done two ponies with saran hair), styling it was not as easy as with the nylon hair.

From what I understand, nylon holds up to heat a bit better as well. =3

I also recommend nylon. That's what I use most of the time. It's beautiful and shiny, and after it's been washed, it's very soft. It's nice and easy to style, and it doesn't stick up.

I actually prefer saran but I love the look of long straight hair. :P

I actually use both nylon and saran from Dollyhair depending on the look I'm going for. I'd probably use saran more often if there were more colors available. Nylon is definitely better for curls or waves but nothing beats saran for sleek, straight styles.

Here are a couple of examples of Saran - It lays perfectly straight without any effort, no styling necessary. ;)

Nylon can also lay straight but it take a little bit of styling.

And of course it holds curl beautifully. :)

I've used just about everything from every site - right now I'm really excited about the tinsel hair and color blends from retrodollsus.com.

I, like Kala - use everything from everywhere. Retrodolls US is a fabulous source for colors you can't find other places and I love the fact that it is run by a pony person - Enchantress41580. :)

All good recommendations for you :)
