how to get a G4's head off
« on: November 26, 2012, 09:11:20 PM »
My title sounds funny, but I need some help!

I want to attempt my first G4 custom (ok, so pretty much my first full custom MLP ever) but I cannot figure out how to pop that G4 head off. It had a funny knobby inside! Is there a certain technique you use to get it off without having to just chop it off? Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks!!

Also, has anyone rehaired a brush n' grow and been able to put them back together properly (and still working)? I have one with chopped hair I'd love to restore, but I want her to still work!

The best tip I have for a G4 is get its head really hot a squishy. It will still take quite a tug to get it off~

Soak it in some boiling water in a cup for a few minutes as someone stated above. Then once you get the head off you can soak the body part again to help with cutting out the little neck nubby. Will make it a lot easier and may save you a few cuts from your exacto knife. Be really careful since it's your first time those neck nubs are a pain.

I have cocked the head to the back and front giving a small slit (going out) in the plastic that surrounds the peg. This also makes it super easy to get back on and doesn't make it loose or anything. It stays just as well as it would with factory.

I just did my first one and I did the same as Miserati.  I have a little fake fireplace out in my studio, so I held her under that to get her nice and squishy and then twisted the head around and cut a small chunk out.  A little tugging and it came right off and the cut was so small I can't image that it wouldn't hold properly when putting the head back.  As it is I'm doing some sculpting and won't be using it, but I could if i wanted to.  For the part attached to the body I took my exacto and worked it around the plug in a rocking motion.  The first time I just plunged it right in there I cut the pony itself, the blade is just a little too big.  So get the blade about half way in, then work your way around and it will start releasing.  Heat again and yank!

I usually get it off with a combination of brute force and profuse swearing.

I just boil water, dunk the pony for 30 seconds or so, and pull.  It pops right off.

As others have stated, boiling water.
That or handing to a stronger SO.
I find my fiancé tends to snap my plugs though so he's banned from helping :p

I use hot water too. But the plugs are the real problem, I always cut the pony while taking them out.

Edit. Oh yeah, and I'm 99% sure there's a tutorial somewhere in the arena for brush and grows. Try search.

I heat the pony carefully in boiling water then pull it out quickly and pop the head off once it's soft enough. (you'll want oven mits for that).

after that you'll have to use an exacto knife to get the neck plug out.
