Discoloured FSF? D:
« on: July 23, 2012, 01:10:18 AM »
I got my MIB Calla down the other day and she's gone yellow! Anyone else had this happen? Going to give her a bit of a wipe with a magic eraser to see if it makes a difference. Could it be her varnish/paint? I don't remember her being yellow when I bought her a few years back and she's been in a dark cupboard since :(

I'd be careful with the magic eraser. I know with some model horses it pulls the paint/finish off. I dunno if it will with the fillies but I'd be cautious in case.

The white FSF can discolor...
It's thought to be that they were exposed to sun for a long time at some point. It could be she was bought, kept in sun, then sold and you kept her out of the sun, but it had already set the problem in motion by the 1st person.

I have a Cliff I can't sell off because half of him is yellow. Exactly 1 side of him has yellowed, the side whoever had in the sun. It's def. the plastic under the paint. It looks dumb so no one wants him. All FSF except the SweetScents are actually white/offwhite, and then painted with shimmer paint using airbrush machine of some kind. On most, it doesn't matter because the paint is dark enough, but on ones with just shimmer (Calla) or who are pale (Cliff) you will see it when it happens.

Fortunately though Calla's not costly like Cliff is, if you become bothered you can take off your 1's Acc's and then just apply them to a new Calla from Ebay. Sorry this has happend to yours, she is really exotic & pretty.

I'm sorry that happened. :( I feel your pain, I had a nice white Dream Beauty, I just took her out of the storage bin the other day and was just crushed to see that parts of her have badly yellowed. She was only stored for a month or two. :(

somewhere I read about using peroxide to fade a yellowed toy back to white.  I'm trying to find the link - if I do, I'll post it.

**edit** found it http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/accessories.html

it may discolor the hair, and even strip the shimmer off calla, though.  try at your own risk. :(

my calla, cliff, and chloe were all yellowed after having been up in my parents attic for years.  I broke down and bought new ones on ebay, and gave my old fillies (sans accessories) to a coworkers daughter after cleaning them up nice.
looking into a re-branding.

I've never been able to figure out how to clean toys with a shimmer without damaging it.  :\

I have several Barbie and Sindy horse which are yellowed, I intend to get some hair bleach cream and use that on some inconspicuous areas to see what happens. The Sindy horses are the grey/white ones that seem really prone to yellowing :(

Its the chemicals in the plastic. When a Breyer yellows sunfading brings it back to white, so I don't think exposure to the sun is the culprit.

Most Breyers are a completely different type of plastic; however, the newer stablemates are made of a plastic similar to FSFs and playsets and they DO yellow in the sun.

I would probably try the peroxide cream to whiten her before completely giving up.
