feeling unhappy with a new custom
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:03:40 PM »
I just made a custom that I've been wanting to make for a long time... and I think I hate it. The symbols are all painted and the mane is in. all it needs is a tail... and I want to scrap it and start over. Everyone says it's fine and I need to finish it... but I'm just not motivated.  I can't even stand to look at it.

What do you guys do in this situation?

put it in a drawer for a while and see what happens... i mean with ideas... or when you look again.  I have had several pieces, pony and non pony related that i just put away for days to weeks to months and then when i look again, i either am happy or i know what to do to fix it, and if not it goes back into its hole, and I usually forget about it.
I found a custom i was working on over 5years ago that way.  I ended up stripping her and redoing her, only keeping the design of her symbols, but luckily I hadnt put in much of the mane. :/

I agree with hlbmlp.
I dont know how many times iv started a custom with a clear awesome idea in my head, then when it was near done it just didnt live up to my expectations of how I had hoped it would look like. Sometimes I have to just set them aside and ignore them for a while and start over, sometimes ill find a poor abandoned custom and have new ideas of how to finish/fix it.

I suggest finishing it. I had one I really was not happy with recently but I went ahead and finished her up anyway. Now I think she's lovely! Maybe not exactly what I saw in my head but everything still came together to make her work out well.

I put my customs aside if I lose interest or can't decide if I like them anymore - you can always come back to the project later, and trying to force the creative process rarely turns out well, in my experience.

Finish her and give her to one of your friends who says she looks fine. If I can't get joy from doing something that I'm proud of, at least I can get joy from someone happy.

When I get to the point where I am turning it over in my hands, looking at it and something feels well...wrong about it I really try to decide why that is. I actually had a g4 mommy and baby bubbles set I finished in one night. The next day I was looking at it and it just bothered me. It looked rushed and I acidentally used the water nixi instead of the atomic turqoise. That was part of the issue. So i dehaired em, stripped em and started over. Baby bubbles got tossed back into the bait bin because I just couldnt look at more yellow for a while. Mommy I went ahead and redid. She looks great, just need to hair her. Haven't done it yet.

I usually question myself till its done. When it is done I either love it or look at it and go what went wrong here.  I would say if you can't figure out WHY you hate it then add the hair and finish it up to see if that makes it better. I cant count how many times I try an idea, get almost done and then look at it going...no...RESTART!

if you only have the tail left i would just finish it and move on. all the time i redo customs. i did a swap with jeapose and decided to redo the custom in 2-3 days before shipping because i simple didn't like it.

Set it aside for a few days (or weeks) and come back to it.  I find if I'm getting frustrated, or doubting a custom, setting it aside and focusing on something else for a while helps.

thanks for the advice guys. I have him tucked away in my craft box for now. I asked my mom and she said to put in his tail and sell him. What do you guys think of that suggestion? I mean his paining is good (if I do say so myself) I just don't care for the design anymore.

That said, I almost don't want to part with the bait.
Why is making ponies so complicated!? D:

I guess I haven't not felt like finishing a custom. There was that one time when it came to the point that the custom I was working on didn't have any hair. Then I finished working on her. Though I agree its easy to just tuck them in a drawer or on a shelf far away and not work on them. Maybe you could sell him as is but thats really your choice or how you feel about it. Ponies are always tough love when it comes to customizing them....  >_<

Dunno that this would help with your situation, but I try to plan out my customs before I start work. I usually design it in Photoshop beforehand, so I can tweak things on the computer until it looks right. Then I'll adjust things while I'm working, if something needs to be, but I find it does help with getting the design how I like it.

The downside is its more time-consuming to plan it all out like that, and lessens the potential for spontaneous design. Up to you, just thought I'd toss that idea out there!
