help please
« on: June 17, 2012, 02:34:52 PM »
Howdieee

So i was trying to make horns for my pony thinking it would be a piece of cake .. but no =/ running into problems.
I couldn't find a tutorial for them but if anyone knows of one can you please link me?

My problemmo:
I first tried moulding them straight onto the head but they wouldn't stay, and then i put some wire into the head to try keep them attached, which i cant say worked fabulously but i do have some really bad looking loose horns now. I was wondering what u guys do, do u make the horns and then glue them on, if so with what? and if do you make like a mesh frame and sculpt round that then attach it or something?

Basically, any magic solution would be fabby ^^ thankiezz

put a straight pin in the head. trhu some plastic wrap or wax paper (if you're using apoxie or another no bake clay) sculpt it without "blending" it to the ponies head. let dry. it's now removeable for painting separately, and won't fall off during hairing.  if you're using a baking clay you can sculpt it similarly but without anything between. it might stick tot he pony after but should pop off with just a couple of little wiggles. the advantage to using a pin is being able to recenter it or even leave the horn option altogether.

That's pretty close to what I do too. :) I usually just sculpt right onto the head though so I can go ahead and add tuffs of hair around it if I want.  But I also use the pin method.  And painting them separately can be much easier depending on the project.  It gives it structure and security and you can make the horns longer and thinner as desired.

Now if you are making a ram horn or a spiral horn you'll probably need more armature, either cut down wire grate or a thicker gauge piece of wire to get that nice circular shape to the ram horn and support it away from the head.  I'd show some pics of my latest but I need to wait till it gets to it's new owner before showcasing. :)

nope. because the vinyl will hug the pin and actually keep it pretty secure.

Sarah: Oo pics would be great to see when you have them ^^
I am going to rip the horns iv tried off and attempt them again tomorrow, i kinda wanted ram/spiral like horn/s (haha lots of indecision) so i might try your way with the armature and hope it works, do u just attach ur armature like u would attach one for wings but on the head?

What I do is take a piece of wire, push it through the plastic and twist it in a knot for say in the head with pliers. Then I spiral it on the outside and add clay. For me this works great as the horn is not loose even when I loosen it ( by accident) when rehairing. Hope that makes sense.

I'm very similar to gotbunny.  You definitely need a thicker gauge wire though if you can bend it easily with your hands it won't bear the weight of the clay.  So needle nose pliers are perfect for getting a nice curve with a thick gauge.  Great advice!

If you need something thicker or flatter I use a small piece of grating that looks sort of like a ladder and I just attach the same way as wings on the head.  It's funny because it almost looks like a roller coaster track at the base he he.  It depends a little where you want the horns.  Ears can get in the way.  I find generally the way gotbunny describes works better.
