Show me some pony eyes!
« on: May 24, 2012, 08:44:35 AM »
I have been struggling with getting eyelashes to look right on g3s because of that horrid ridge (eyebrow) over the eye. So I'm thinking I need to do something different and would love to see some of your eyes for inspiration!
Sooo can I see some? (Any generation!)
And if you have any tips on how to get the eyelashes painted on so its a consistand line over that ridge that would be wonderful too!
Thank you!

Sometimes I stay below the ridge.. Mainly for boy ponies.

For girl ponies, I try to keep the lashes going over the ridge to a minimum, as the ridge still messes me up sometimes.

Tracing along the eye ridge is something new for me

I really don't have a better angle to show off this one's eye..

For all of these.. I hold the head upside down when painting the upper eyelashes. I also make sure my paint is thin and the brush is wet when starting. Thinnest brush possible.. Light strokes.. Dab a bit of paint off on a napkin first so it doesn't flood out onto the pony.. Let it dry.. Go over it with a fresh xacto blade. Go over again with more lashes if needed. I like the texture this gives and how it makes the lashes look. The xacto blade can also be used gently to remove errant lashes and strokes.

I too use a line/eyeshadow as it helps with the lashes and also helps the eye to pop.  I almost always "kiss" the lash onto the other side of the ridge as I don't like the eye crease to cut off the lash.

Thanks for the tips! I should just cut down the size of the lash maybe to make the line look a little less creased and weird.

I have a horrible time with eyes too, especially with the pony I just finished. It has been so long since doing eye lashes that I had to redo them several times. One of these days I'm going to figure out a system that works for me that doesn't make me blanch when I look at them.

i try to stay below the ridge....but if you go for super long, no matter what you do there is always an angle where they look "off".....but in general you can still make it look great :)

I prefer a more hasbro style eye, so I usually don't go over the ridge, but just to.  It all depends on the look you're going for I suppose.  If you paint the upper liner right on the crease of the lid ridge, it will give you more room for the lashes.  Painting them at more of an angle will make them appear longer too.  I use a 20/0 spotter with a thick handle.  I make sure that the paint is really wet and wipe it off several times while doing the lashes especially because it will start drying out after a lash or two.

Not the best pic, but it's a WIP pic.  The lashes are more angled here so they look a little longer.

On this one I did go over the ridge.  Some poses have more of an eyebrow ridge than others, so you just have to fit the lashes to the pose I guess?   I painted the upper edge of the lash first, and then went back and widened the base from crease to the lid line to make it look more even.  I touched up over the lashes with the eye shadow color in a couple places were it didn't look as nice as I'd wanted it to.  You can also take an exacto knife and lightly scrape off any mistakes if the paint isn't very dry.

I know that Darkhorse adds liner in the crease as part of how she does eyes on many of her customs, so that's another way to do it too.

Thanks, sounds like what I am doing is right I think I am just wanting longer lashes on all of them and that crease doesn't always allow me to do it the way I would like lol
