bleeding dye D:
« on: May 16, 2012, 04:27:56 PM »
I made Low a while back and have since placed him on the shelf and... forgot about him. I took him down today to check on him and the dye has leeched into his paint job! It looks like it's dyed the sealer too, not just the paint underneath.

What can I do? Should I strip his symbols/eyes and repaint them? Or should I just paint over them? I let him sit for about 4 months after his dye-job before I painted him. Is there anything I can do now to stop him from bleeding into the new paint?

If you strip him and repaint, may I recommend sealing him before you paint again?  What type of sealant do you use?  On my dyed ponies I usually spray a light coat of Testors Dullcote before I paint, and then seal lightly again when it's done.  I haven't had bleeding problems when I've done that.

Black dye is the worst when it comes to bleeding, though any dark color will do it. I have had bleeding from black dye also.. But I don't have a time estimate. I would guess that he has sat on the shelf long enough for the bleeding to stop.. Just strip him and repaint. Sealing him first is not a bad idea. Just keep an eye out for fade spots as he starts to rack up the years. Since he is more grey than black, he might get some odd spots. My black ponies have a faint brown tint to them in places these days.

He's sealed with modge podge, I'll try the Testors Dullcote if I can find it. Is it matte or shiny when it dries?

Also I started to strip some of the paint and it's kinda making the dye turn grey. I don't know how to get the paint off without acetone, but I think it's damaging him pretty bad...

In my experience, sealing first doesn't help either... What is recommended after you dye a pony is to let it sit for about half a year I think... but even I still had dye bleeding problems after that... if you strip him you could try a vinegar soak for a short while then boiling him in clean water to try and remove any extra dye. It might take a few tries though.

I've been meaning to test to see if Gesso could keep dye from bleeding through, but till then I'm not really wanting to dye another pony x.x

I bet humidity has something to do with it. I wonder if after he dries, try curing him in the oven for a little bit on a low setting? Just to get the leftover moisture in the plastic out before you seal him.

over the years i find i prefer to steer clear of dying. the bleeding always seems to be an issue, even when i seal and paint over (this has even happened with a FBR over dye)
I have also had issues with dyed ponies fading...and even changing colors (one i dyed purple changed to a copper color...so weird

unfortunately I don't know of a fix. you can try painting over the sealed paint job, then sealing again. sometimes that helps.

testors dullcote dries matte

good luck!
