Sundance Restored! Sunfading + Rehair
« on: May 10, 2012, 03:49:56 PM »
First of all, my apologies: I didn't think to take 'before' pics on my first couple of pony restorations. So all I have is an in-progress pic of Sundance after the most dramatic work had already been done.

Sundance was in need of sunfading for a pink highlighter mark and overall grunginess and yellowing. She also had a buzz cut.

Her she is, her mane restored using her dollyhair color match, Tea Rose. It's longer and the plugs are thicker than normal MLP, Sundance was very self-conscious and wanted to overcompensate for her previous near-baldness. She kind of looks like she could be related to Fluttershy now! She's waiting for her tail in this pic:

Finally, my nylon washers and zip ties arrived, and Sundance got her new tail! You'll notice I restyled the mane, with much looser curls:

And her NDS - her neck isn't glued back together, it won't jut out quite that much on the seam once it is glued:

And here she is reunited with her best friend Megan. They're wearing the Picnic in the Park set, one of my favorites! Megan is modelling the dress that needed some re-sewing that I finished today:

Overall I'm really happy with how Sundance turned out. Her highlighter mark is still very very faintly present in some lights, but she has so much hair over it that it doesn't really matter. She was a pretty easy restore project but she was a good way to dive into doing this stuff :) I'm now working on several more pony restorations and look forward to sharing them.

Thanks all! I wasn't sure at first how I felt about the unconventional hairstyle, but I went ahead with it and I'm so glad I did! And seeing all the beautiful alt rehairs in the Corral thread has made me realize that sometimes it is possible to do better than the Hasbro factory ;) Most of my restores will indeed aim to bring a pony as close to original condition as possible, but I have a few upcoming alt hair restores in the works too!

A wonderful job! I have a brazilian G1, some people say they are rare, waiting for a restoration... But I'm very affraid of doing something wrong...

I know the feeling! All I can advise is, do small amounts at a time with a lot of patience. You can always do more later, but you can't undo what has already been done! And non-invasive procedures like sunfading are actually quite gentle, so starting with that and working your way into more complex stuff seems like a good way to do this :) I am now a sunfading expert, and starting to deal with inner issues like rust and mold. And more intense outside issues like pindot :) Also, don't underestimate the power of simple cleaning and elbow grease. It's amazing what you can do with a Magic Eraser, some soap, and hard work. Oh, and never be afraid to ask people here questions! The amount of community knowledge when it comes to restoring is very impressive. I think as a whole, we know far more than any individual can remember! I can't wait to see what you do with Brazilian ponies. It's true that they're rare, but I know many people restore Nirvana ponies, and done right it only enhances them :)

So white and pretty!!!! She's really such an under rated pony.  That's my favorite Megan and pony wear set too.  :)
