*twitch twitch* O.e G3 won't take dye?
« on: May 11, 2012, 06:31:40 PM »
Okay. I'm an my wits end here... I have had three g3 ponies now that will not take dye.  :|

I can rit dye some shabby G1's just fine, no trouble there, but every time I've done it with a G3, NOTHING happens.

I'm finally typing this up because I'm trying to rit dye a WHITE G3, and it's still not really taking the blue dye...

Are there types of ponies that just don't absorb color? Has anyone else had an issue like this?

I've been pouring over dye guides, wondering what could be wrong here, since G3 SHOULD take dye. They do in all the guides. And now I have a white thing sitting in a cup of boiled water and blue dye?  Nuthin' ... Nope, notta. She's whiite, with a slight tint of blue.

Any ideas of what the heck's going on?

Question 1. Are you using Liquid or Powder? If the answer is Liquid, that is your problem.

Comment 1.. Some ponies don't take dye. All blue g3 ponies I have dyed have faded horribly over the years, so I dont dye at ALL anymore. Talking disgusting fades jobs. So I'm not much more help than that.

Hmm, it's powder, so that isn't the issue.
Eeeep, like, splotchy fade jobs? Not fun. D:

White Ponies have been known to not take dye for some reason... at least in the G3s and G4s I believe. I've had no problems with liquid black dye but have yet to try others. You could try a lighter color pony that isn't white and see if that one works. I've sworn off dying because you can't paint the pony till after the dye fully settles and even then there have been cases where the dye will still bleed through paint x.x

Indeed. Very splotchy.

On the other hand, the two black ones that I dyed around the same time showed very little splotch. They did have a few brown spots, but mostly they were ok.

i heard white g3's dont take dye as well as any other color g3, that could be the problem. it may be best to just buy a blue g3 instead of dyeing a white one. the dye can fade, too *points to above picture*

I have used both liquid and powder on white ponies with good results. it might be that the pony you used had a bad plastic casting.

I've had better luck with the powdered Rit, also, some G3's are made of harder plastic.  Those I've always had issues with them taking the dye properly.  Make sure you've given the pony a good wipe down with acetone to remove any dirt, oils, or glue.  Then, wash her with some dish soap.  Make sure you're using boiliing water, and that the dye had been mixed into well.  The hot water really helps.

I also notice that you say you just have the pony sitting in boiled water and dye? The best way to dye ponies is to do it actively, that is, a pot on the stove with the dye bath constantly boiling. It opens up the pores of the plastic and pushes the color in much better than just sitting in a container of still water.

I had a g3 that I mostly dyed brown years ago. It has faded quite a bit , but is still a light beige color. I think I used the powder and boiled the pony. I had it at a med/low boil since I was holding the pony in the dye because I wanted it's feet to stay white.. The one I used was just a plain white body, no shimmeriness to it.
