dont worry hun youre not alone in the beginners anxiety lol. i myself have been dragging my heels getting started. tho im sure ill have a ton of fun doing it once i finally make the leap XD
thats part of the reason why i got in the custom supplies swap, i figure i do a lot of artsey stuff already and have a ton of spare supplies lying around it might force me to finally get up and DO one of the ideas thats been clogging my brain already.
so basically try not to worry too much, at least you wont be alone taking your first steps into customs, we can share our new projects and grumble together haha

Just remember, you can remove the hair if you don't like it and you can remove paint and sculpting if you don't like it. You can take just about any custom and strip it back down to the base and start over.

Alatariel: I saw you amazing repose and I am very impressed! ;D He(she) Is looking great so far! I can't wait to see the finished product! ;D

Eluluu: Hahaha that would be great to have someone to grumble with! Lol it's great to know I'm not the only one! ;D I wish I hadn't missed the supply swap :( I really need hair but....I have no idea how to go about ordering and it doesn't look like it's cheap either. Lol Wallet, why are you so emptyyyyy??

HavACrumpet: Thanks so much for the tip! That is so very true, as painstaking as it most likely is! Hehe :3

My advice is to start simple, with just a re-hair or a symbol. Then try more complicated paint jobs and fancy hairstyling. There are people who have done sculpting on their first ponies, and I admire them. But I think it's easier to do something simple to give you a bit of confidence first. I suggest you paint thin layers! You can always add another layer of paint, but it's much harder to put less.

I made a LOT of mistakes on my very first custom. Actually I made so many I had to start over and found even more mistakes later! Best advice I can offer is PLAN your design. Have at the very least a basic idea of what your going for, otherwise it will run away from you and it will be a mess. Also if you don't know what materials to use, look it up. Some things such as spray sealers/paints will stay sticky for life! Don't be afraid to spend a little money on paint. Applebarrel may be cheap, but you get what you pay for. Overall, read the tutorials, relax and have fun

Thank you so much for your advice Ellis! :3 I have definitely been planning her out before ever beginning to attempt anything on the actual pony!  ^.^  I'll certainly do a lot of research on good sealants and such to use :3
