Question about some discolouration.
« on: May 03, 2012, 08:43:46 PM »
So, I have been fortunate enough to find some ponies in yard sales and at thrift stores.  All were in various states, but all worked out to about a quarter or so, so no big deal.  One of the ponies I was super excited to find was a Mimic.  I just got around to cleaning these ponies up and I noticed as I did so that a couple of them, including Mimic which is why I am asking, had some odd discolouration I am not seeing in any of the topics online.  To me it looks like they were coloured at some point, you know, given some "make up" and what not.  Then it looks like maybe "mom" cleaned them up at some point or something, but I could be wrong.  They have some discoloured stripes that sort of look like rubs or something, but then they also have blotches as well and there are some signs of pink in them too like maybe marker or highlighter was there at some point.  They are not super noticeable from far away, but you can see them when you are closer.  What do you think they might be?  Any advice would be great, just don't know if it is something that will spread or anything like that.  I am super excited about the finds, though, they are still great to me.

Pony accessories like saddles, bridles, and shoes would leave pink "highlighter" marks on ponies. They also had reddish pink pony makeup back in the day that kids were supposed to use on ponies. Its not uncommon to find "lipstick" and "hoof polish" done in a dark pink and I think a ton of work and some sunfading could get it out. I have a Nightglider with pink feet because Hasbro actually made commercials showing kids how to paint their ponies hooves with this pony makeup.

If you can upload pictures for us to take a look it would certainly help but as HavACrumpet says "make up" [lipstick and nail polish] marks as well as plastic regrind and of course "saddle" stains from pony wear are the most common issues which cause the kind of marks you are describing but images should help people say what they think it is and hopefully point you in the right direction for a "fix" if one is possible

And congrats on the Mimic at a yard sale/thrift store - in any condition she is a pretty great pony to track down!

Ok, I will try to get pics this weekend.  I am thinking it was an ink situation upon further inspection ad getting to a couple more ponies last night.  One had some remaining glitter/paint/ink stuff on it (it was green this time)  and upon washing it off, what remains appears to be a greenish centre bleed and a bleaching type outer spread.  the other ponies are like this to varying degrees and depending on the ponies original colour.  With one pony, the ink colour is more obvious than the out lying areas (she is a deeper colour and the ink is very dark), the others have more of the outer missing pigment than the ink (they are lighter ponies like Mimic and the ink or whatever seems to have done more time and movement).  I don't know if it is fixable or not as it looks like the body colour is just missing and I don't think that is too fixable.  Plus the stripey marks look more like rubs and different altogether, but they are great to have non the less, especially Mimic (her hair is sooo nice and pink, but her eye definitely hit the floor so to speak and has not much glaze).  I will get those pics in if I can get a good close up as otherwise they are too obvious.  Thanks for the responses!

The different colours with glitter sounds a lot like a little kid had some access to nail polish

Cant want to see the pictures.
