Want to help me spend my tax return?
« on: May 02, 2012, 05:58:23 AM »
It's that time. Tax return came in. While most of it will go towards paying off bills so I can attempt to keep my new years resolution of getting out of debt, I also want to buy myself something. This is a great chance to get my airbrush and compressor.

I know I have asked about airbrushed and compressors a lot before, but I still feel that I don't know enough to make an educated decision and be happy with my choice.

Compressors don't need to be high on PSI from what I recall. But there are some designated as airbrush compressors and some markete as intended for tires.

I have no idea what the difference is.

I'm looking for compressor suggestions that are affordable as well a suited to using on only ponies. Something that will last. Please share a link if you can.

When it comes to the airbrush, I know a but more. It's brands that I am not sure of. I want a dual action air brush that is a gravity feed. I want something that can do fine detail. Well, as fine as one might hope to get with an airbrush anyway.

So again, brands and links and suggestions?

I just really want to be certain before I buy and I really really value the experience and opinion of everyone here!

I had the same issue and after lots of searching I finally got the Iwata Silverjet and I could not be happier. All you do is plug it in and go. Nothing to set up. Comes with a cord and all sorts of adapters for different air brushes. As for a brush. I have a third or fourth hand Iwata and while its not bad (does good work) Its incredibly finicky though most of that is probably user error ^.^ Probably wouldn't be an issue right out of the box. When not suffering from user errors its a great little machine. I will probably always stick with duel action triggers as thats sort of what I am used to ^.^

Side note: when you mix airbrush paint you can really only keep it for 3 or four days. Something happens and it starts separating like mad and after a week or two it kind of smells like mold or something of the like. Apple barrel is the worse paint to use on an airbrush. drys so fast and clogs quickly. Ceramcoat works well. Once you think the paint is right...go a little thinner...at least thats my way and im getting good at it finally.

Thanks for that info! I'm used to using a single action airbrush at work, from Bakery Crafts or Deco Pac, but from what I have read, dual action is the way to go. The compressors seem to be the most expensive part though.

The compressor I use is very similar to this one: http://www.tcpglobal.com/airbrushdepot/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=ABD+TC-20

I've been using it for about 3 years now without issue. It's quiet (compared to other compressors), light weight and easily stored in a cabinet when not in use. ;)

I used Apple Barrel and dont have a airbrush AND I HATED IT!!! :( I only use Folk Art now for brush painting. Apple Barrel especially the white just down right sucks for ponies or multiple coats.

Thanks for the link Pop! I had been looking at that compressor last time I sat down and tried to figure this stuff out lol. What gun do you use with it?

I have a Paasche VL and I highly recommend it. I've had mine for 15 years and it still works great. ;)

Here's a good review...
