Dremel Tool for Sanding!
« on: April 28, 2012, 01:07:23 PM »
So I've recently begun sculpting on ponies (I will post WIP pictures soon so keep a look out).
And while I'm really proud of how it all looks I know I will need to sand the heck out of the sculpted parts to get them nice and smooth for painting.

I know a few people on here use Dremel tools and I have one (my dad's LOL) but I'm not sure what size bit or grain for the sanding I should be using?

Any help, I really don't want to screw this up and sandpaper wont work properly.

Colorscapesart uses her dremmel for sanding sculpted ponies, I think.. I tried, but I got poor results. Things were uneven and grooves got left in the sculpting that I then had to refill. I wound up sanding by hand.

If she doesn't pop in here, perhaps you could send her a friendly PM?

I might just do that =D
I'm a bit tentative about it really but the sandpaper I was using just kept tearing and I couldn't smooth the teeny bits. UGH.

I bought a set of small metal sanding files to help reach grooves and such.. And hobby shops sell "sanding sticks" Which are essentially foam nail files cut into narrow swizzle sticks. They have three grits. Fine, medium, and coarse. These are awesome because they bend. For the rest, I just sand by hand, or shave with my Xacto  knife if it is super lumpy.

then i suggest finding a rotary nail tool. their cheaper than dremmels and work really well for finger print removal. also on mine, the tips are rounded so no nasty edges left in the sculpting when i use it.

I already have a Dremel though, so if I can use that instead of going out and spending more money I'd rather do that.

I use my dremal on all my sculpted customs. I just gota cheap set of polishing bits. The smoother the bit feels the finer the results, perfect for fingerprint removal :lovey:

I think the can either be white or blue? But they look like stone. There are others that also are sandpaper on the bit, which are great for removing more

What sort of material are you using to sculpt with? You can cut down a lot of sanding by just smoothing as you work - there are different smoothing methods for different clays. I don't remember the last time I did any sanding on a sculpted pony because for me it's easier to smooth while the clay is still soft.

It's an air drying clay called Das. It smoothes well with water but it will still need sanding as it dries quite rough.
It's the likes of the feathers on the hooves and the forehead where I've blocked up the hole where the baits horn used to be.

I just want the tack to be all smooth and pretty before I paint him.

I've used the Das before and just hand sanded with 320 and 400 grit wet/dry sand paper.  A couple of coats of paint and they don't look too bad at all.
