Straw Curls
« on: April 26, 2012, 05:13:39 AM »
Im wondering if I am doing mine too thick or something.. When I make them, I always feel like I should be doing more straws with less hair on them. Especially if I planned to leave the curls in straw curl form. But the straws get cluttered fast..

So this is what I usually end up with.

Admittedly, I use the large straws (like straws for shakes) when I plan to be doing loose curls. But I still feel like I ought to be able to get MORE.

So how many curls can you get per head? per mane? How do you deal with the straws cluttering up top?

Just depends how you place the straws, and it also depends on the pose and the hairstyle.

I typically do around 8 for the tail, and I use the larger straws as well.

And anywhere from 6-10 for the mane, again depending on style.

Largly one sided hair style

Split/parted style

If you are doing pin curls at the top of a straw curled style, I find it helps to leave the top section of hair lose and do the straw curls first. Then you can use the hair that you are pinning down to help cover up any weird bits and also to hold the curls in the position you want them. I did that with this girl

NoDivision.. How do you arrange the straws so they don't push each other around and get all bunched up at the top? Mine tend to push each other around and knock hair loose at the top.

Also, if you curl first, then pin, how do you manage to pin without destroying the curl?

Maniah, your curls look lovely to me! (Or your custom's curls, more like :P ) Very neat and pretty.

I usually follow the number of curls of the Candy Cane ponies, i.e. four for the mane and three for the tail. Maybe I should try doing more, NoDi's curls are luscious... Then again, I haven't done this kind of tight straw curls many times, I usually give my ponies looser curls and making a few bigger ones seems to work best for those.

The answer to both questions is "carefully". Just take your time and arrange the straws carefully, slotting them right in close to each other. You may have to wrap some culrs more than once if things get in the way, but they'll fit. Plus using multiple bobby pins at the top end of the straws to hold the hair in place helps. And I've never had any problems with 'destroying' curls once I take them down. They're pretty durable :)

I pin the straws to each other, that way they move less and stay neat.

I discovered pinning the straws together on this custom.. I bobby pinned them together, actually.

Doing their hair is the most annoying part lol. I am overweight, so holding the pony between my knees doesn't work so well. I often want to go out and buy a vice with a table clamp  so they dont move around so much!

I guess I will just need more patience for the smaller more numerous curls. I am pleased with the results I get, I just feel like I could do better, but I had no idea how.

I feel your pain there. I usually sit on my bed cross legged and hold the pony with my feet. Not my bare feet! But like through the blanket XD

I'm glad I'm not the only one
