benzoyl peroxide on white ponies?
« on: April 18, 2012, 11:35:06 AM »
I was just wondering if anybody has used acne cream to treat a white pony with cancer and what results have come of it. I have 3 Starshines, two perfectly mint and white but with cancer dots all over them, and 1 who has a brown body from cancer and has had leaky plastic for so long she's starting to harden. So I've chosen to sacrifice the nastiest one to science and have put some acne cream on one side of her. I'm not sure how long I should leave it on or if I should do sun or not but I will see I guess. I'm thinking of trying a spot on the back of a yellowed show stable too.

Eeeek.....I have seen some pretty nasty reactions to acne cream - it is pretty aggressive stuff...

I think its a little hit or miss as to when it works - sometimes it will start to remove the colour from the plastic and on white ponies it has been known to turn them yellow..

But...I have also seen people have good success with it as well if used cleverly enough.

Personally I wouldnt use it but thats just because I am a worrier and the strongest chemical I use is a tiny bit of acetone on a cottonbud!

Well the pony is brown with cancer and oozing sticky plasticiser so I'm not going to cry if it yellows. Not going to touch a show stable until I see how bad this stuff can get.

From what I've heard, it can continue to work even when it's washed off (same as it does with skin, it gets into the pores and works its magic deep down). So maybe wash it off a bit early and expect the whitening to continue for a couple of days :)

you have to be careful! it can yellow white ponies :( i have had this happen :( try it under the pony's hoof, leave it for a day then look at it after a couple of weeks. as baby said it can still work even after it has been washed off, it can also transfere to another pony if they are stood right next to each other.

All I have so far is acne cream, not the hair stuff. I left the first bit on for 14 hours yesterday and when I got home it was dried and did nothing. So now I have it in the sun in the car. This pony is beyond bait as I think even a repaint would not dry due to the leaky plastic. No worries about what happens to it.

Yes, I've heard of a few people who've had success with whitening the hard plastic playsets.

I haven't tried it on playsets, but I have bought white ponies that were treated with it and have yellowed.  This is my opinion from my experience, but I think it has to do with the type of plastic the pony is made out of.

Example, I used oxy 10 + sunfading to remove a black sharpie heart that had been drawn under the tail of an otherwise mint Moondancer.  She's still ok, even after years of having her in my collection.

Example #2, I bought a Baby Candy that had been restored.  She had a couple places on her that had yellowed from zit cream being used to fade pen marks.  Her plastic is completely different than Moondancer's.  It's hard and more dense, whereas Moondancer's is much more pliable and less opaque.

For the playsets (I looked at the the link that hathorcat posted)  I would be interested to see what kind of results could be achieved if you were to use a combination of hair peroxide + sun.  ::eyes her baity nursery::

Unlike ponies, sun is what discolors playsets, so I don't think the results would be good, although if someone has tried that combination, I'd be interested to see.

It could also just be age, exposure to different temperatures, climates, etc.  My childhood playsets were yellowed after being in storage in my mom's attic and they were never taken outside.  I think it would be worth doing a test patch, perhaps on the bottom if additional yellowing from sun exposure could be a possible concern.

Well, I'm not saying sun is the only thing that discolors them, just one of the things, so I'd be surprised if sun can also whiten.

I hope it works for you!

I've never tried it, but I heard that it can yellow white ponies.
