I ruined my MLP shoes :-( *update*
« on: March 27, 2012, 12:06:24 AM »
I bought the flashprance outfit on ebay a while ago. When I got it I realised that it smelled smoke. I tried putting the whole thing in a plastic bag with cat litter because that worked with Gusty. However, it didn't seem to do that much to the outfit so I also put it outside to air out. The latter seemed to work on the clothes but the shoes pretty much stayed the same. Therefore I decided to soak them in water with a bit of vinegar over night. When I woke up the water was somewhat yellow, I went "no, no, no" and ran to get them out of the water and wash them.:.-/ Well, they have lost some colour and the smell of smoke didn't really go away either. So annoyed. They're still yellow, just not as vibrant as before.:-( So, don't do what I did! Annoying thing number two is that the smoke smell wasn't that bad from the biginning, not as bad as my Gusty.

(Yes, there's one legwarmer missing.)

After they had dried for a while they regained some of the colour.:-) Still not as yellow as before but not as faded as I first thought either.

You can wash a lot of the MLP clothes like regular clothes....I have hand washed a lot in the past with delicate colour fast hand wash detergent...not everything works this way as not everything is washable of course but with the flashprance outfit it will...just wash each piece individually

The yellow in the bowl could have been the nicotine that would have been in the clothes or more likely the vinegar will have caused the yellow in the shoes to run...

I was thinking that the yellow in the bowl could have been the nicotine but they do look a bit faded. It's not the end of the world but it is annoying.

I've been thinking of washing the clothes but I was worried about the colours of the outfit bleeding since it has so many vibrant colours. I think most of the smoke smell is gone though, if not, I'll try and wash it.

Just make sure to use a colour fast hand wash rather than anything too aggressive - and also dont use boiling water and you should be fine...I have washed at least a half dozen of this set of the years [they seem to come in every lot that I purchase] without any issue so far...

I understand being upset about the shoes...pony hugs!!! I am sure you can track down another set if you wish to...pony shoes are usually easy enough to find...

I wouldn't say they're ruined. The buttery yellow is a nice shade.

If they still smell, try tossing them in baking soda instead?

Vinegar is acidic, so I guess it would have attacked the shoes. Perhaps you could use Oxyclean in future? this should lift dirt as well as banish the odour, although the aforementioned baking soda will also get rid of the smell

I think I'll stick with these original shoes even if they lost the colour a bit. I bought Flashprance from someone that sold their childhood ponies and I think the shoes should stay with their original outfit. It probably would have been worse if they had been red. It's not that noticeable when they're yellow.

I'll try and add baking soda to the cat litter in the plastic bag and put them there again. That's the combination I had for my smoke smelling pony, which was cured and almost regained a bit of pony smell instead.

Yes, I have them all. Dug them out about two months ago.:-) High Flyer was one of my later ponies, if not the last one, so it's not strange that she's in good condition. I should add that I've always been careful with my toys and I don't have any siblings that have played with or messed around with them. I made an album on photobcuket, the password is MLParena.

Its probably for the best if you are going to put them on a non-yellow pony. Pony clothes and shoes can stain ponies so I recommend you only display them on baity ponies that you don't mind staining. The yellow shoes might be safer no that the vinegar pulled out what color would probably have leaked onto a pony.
