How do you keep your G4's heads turning?
« on: May 21, 2012, 05:54:53 PM »
So I've got a bunch of G4's to do and I have a problem.
I really want them to have turning heads when they're done.
Thing is I have to remove the plugs (easy enough) and I can glue them back into the neck but I have to cut away some plastic inside the head to get the the hair.
Then of course the heads don't stay on properly.

Help?
It would mean alot to me if I could keep them turning!

Hemostats. I never cut plastic from the neck, and I can always get the hair out with a pair of hemostats. Even before those, I just used a lot of elbow grease with the smallest pliers I had. The plastic shrunk back in place.

I second Maniah's opinion of hemostats. The first couple of customs I did I cut away some of the neck plastic to get to the hair, and it just didn't work out well. Hemostats are the most amazing things ever (I got my pair at a Radio Shack). Just keep a bowl of very hot water on hand when removing the hair. When you start to have trouble getting the hair out, just plop the head back in the hot water for a soak, and then go back to pulling out hair with the hemostats. Just be careful not to burn yourself.

I have a mother who happens to be a nurse. No guesses what I'm asking for :p
Thank you for this by the way.
You've made both me and my customers very happy people.

I got some very, very thin pliers at Hobby Lobby in the beading and jewelry section that work well for pulling a G4's head off (they don't work for much anything else, but they're perfect for this application.)  Also, boil the head before you do it - it'll make the plastic more pliable and easier to stretch the neck hole temporarily instead of cutting the plastic.

Make sure you scrape all of the hair out of the plugs with a screwdriver or something first! I finally got a pair of hemostats just last week from eBay for 2.75 with free shipping, and they're AMAZING  :whoa:  WHERE HAVE THEY BEEN ALL MY LIFE????

I use Hemostats to get the hair out, however I find I still have to cut the neck plastic a little to get the head on the plug on a little easier (I've ruined paint jobs before because I did not do this!)

I too have ruined paint jobs. My solution for this is to shove a pencil or pen into the neck hole, leave it there for 10 minutes or so. Grasp the plug in a pair of pliers, and then pullthe pencil out and jam the plug in swiftly. It  helps me to cradle the head in my palm, and rock the plug a little while inserting it. For the most part, this keeps me from ruining my paint jobs. Sometimes it does still need a touch up though.
