i dont know about back then, but right now 80s toys and tvshows and clothes are all the rage right now!  Ponies are going for scary amounts online in japan, and there are ponies tucked in the shelves of certain stores aimed at this trend.  it makes me happy to see something i recognize so well in a foreign country...

Gotta love Fairy kei. It fits so well with the 80s.

I really don't think horses have that much popularity in Japan. I rarely see any horse stuff when I look for stuff to collect. If I had to think about something then MAYBE a unicorn/pegasus like Unico. ... but. I don't find it to be a common theme at all.

I haven't heard anything about importing... but... well, this isn't a well discussed topic. I find it silly for them to have redesigned the whole toy , and then import and sell the originals. @__@; If that's true, and they sold well, then there should be a bunch of old G1s around).

But the other thing that I have heard is about space. People who live in Japan were less likely to hold onto such things... due to living space things. So I heard that most of the stuff back then was thrown away).

I will second that.
Apparently horses are not kawaii enough. Try kitties and bunnies lol. And bears, dogs, pigs, chickens, pandas, monkeys, hamsters... in Japan any animal is cuter than a horse. And if you ever do see a horse it's bound to be unicorn.
Look at Jewelpets for example: there are lots of cute cats, dogs, bunnies and so on, even the odd bee or fish. But are there any horses? There is *one* and she is a pegacorn.

I also agree most people have probably thrown out their 80s stuff.
In Japan there isn't really any second owner market the way there is in western countries. Well, they may slowly be getting there, but it's still not natural to them the way it is to us - and it most definitely wasn't back in the 80s.
Not sure why though. I can only guess it has to do with the japanese obsession for cleanliness and purity or maybe the japanese economy was always so good people could easily afford to buy *new* stuff.
