New to Customs question
« on: February 18, 2012, 08:25:15 AM »
I know I'll probably end up with more as I go along, but what do you guys seal your painted ponies with?  I've painted one with acrylics and plan on doing a few more.  Also favorite types/brands on paint would also be very helpful!  Thanks in advance!

Two products that a lot of us use to seal are Mod Podge and Testors Dulcote.

Mod podge you can get in either matte or glossy. Glossy is good for eyes and anything else you want shiny. Matte is good for symbols. There is also sparkly mod podge if you're interested in that.

Testors dulcote is a spray sealer that has a true matte finish. It's my personal favorite. It's prefect for sealing ponies with full body repaints because you don't have to worry about brushmarks.

I use Mod Podge for my ponies. I have both matte and glossy. I usually water mine down a bit before using it, though. Glossy Mod Podge can get a little on the sticky side when you use it straight from the bottle and it can be a little too thick. Watering it down makes it easier to paint on and cuts down on how sticky it can be.

I use Army Painter's Anti shine matt spray as I have no idea where to get Mod Podge in Finland. So far that spray has worked wonders.

Oh, forgot to add: I use a water soluable gloss for glossy parts like eyes.

I use Testors Dullcote on all of my customs - the matte finish is amazing. :)
I also use Triple Thick Gloss Glaze on eyes and I have a small bottle of Sparkle Mod Podge I use for accents when necessary. ;)

ETA: I forgot about paints.
I use Createx airbrush colors for both airbrushing and hand painting. The consistency is already perfect for painting ponies and the pigment ratio is fairly high so it provides good coverage.

I use Liquitex Matte Varnish!  To be honest, it's definitely not a matte finish per say, but it also isn't glossy... if that makes any sense.  But it's already nice and watered down, though I'm fairly sure it's more expensive than Mod Podge.

For paint, I always use acrylics meant for models.  The brand I use most is Vallejo (and it's good stuff-I just got back into customizing after years and everything I've opened up has still been good), but I've also use Formula P3.  If you're just starting out, stick with the cheap stuff from the craft store, but if you decide this is something you like and want to invest in, get model acrylics.  They're much higher quality and the pigment is ground very fine in them so that it goes on much smoother on the often tiny surfaces we use in customizing.

Thank you all for the advice!  Another question if you don't mind, for those of you that add sculpting on your customs, what do you use?  Epoxy, sculpy? And how do you attach it to the pony?  Thanks again!

Apoxie sculpt is magical!  For smaller pieces, it usually adheres well to the pony, for larger pieces I secure them with wire or pins.
