Customising Questions
« on: February 22, 2012, 02:17:18 PM »
Hey guys, I got a few questions for you customisers out there.
I'm making a Doctor Who custom pony for my best friend as a late birthday present since I couldn't get tickets to a show for her, but I'm a first time customiser.
I've got faith in my abilities and got some tutorials to walk me through it, and I'm going to take it slowly, but the more tips and tricks I can get - the better.

What kind of paint is best to use?
What can I use for sealing the custom so the paint doesn't go all sticky after time? And when shall I seal - before the rehairing?
I know how to rehair - but what can I use for securing the hair? I know there are tail washers for the tail, but what can I do for the mane?
What is a quick and easy way to remove the symbols? Inc. glitter ones.

I think that's it for now, but I'll be sure to check back in if I come up with any more questions ^^

We have a lovely thread where all the tutorials for customizing and other FAQs are stored at. I imagine you can find almost all the answers to your questions here.

I'll give the quick answers

What kind of paint is best to use? Acrylic
What can I use for sealing the custom so the paint doesn't go all sticky after time? And when shall I seal - before the rehairing? Mod Podge works well, also Testors Dullcote.  Easier to seal before hairing.
I know how to rehair - but what can I use for securing the hair? I know there are tail washers for the tail, but what can I do for the mane? Use some glue on the inside of the head just like Hasbro does.
What is a quick and easy way to remove the symbols? Inc. glitter ones.  100% pure acetone!
~Feel free to remind me to leave you feedback!  I'm forgetful!~

Something I want to add about the glitter symbols, is sand paper gets that glitter off rather quickly!

If you are doing a full body repaint I suggest testors acrylics. You don't need to thin them and they brush on streak free if you do thin coats. Any paints made for doing miniatures work well.

100% acetone will clean a pony up well. It removes all paint and such. Might need to soak the glitter a bit.

For the tail, I would avoid metal washers. I use zip ties. Then you never have to worry about rust.
