For Lickety Split I used human hair curlers (and hot water) and pulled the curls at the front apart with my fingers after the hair dried. If you wanted it to look tamer, I think using something larger than a straw would give looser curls, but still a spiral look and less poof (sorry you can't see the back of her hair better- it's less poofy). Do you have a picture of something like what you want it to look like?

I use a little rubber band and put 3-5 straws together for bigger, bouncy curls.  That Lickety Split is gorgeous!
