Morning Glory with sticker stuck to her-- what to do?
« on: May 09, 2012, 01:00:32 PM »
Okay, so here's the thing. I found a Morning Glory flutter at a vintage collectibles shop, and she'll look nice once she's had a bath. Here's the thing: her sticker is stuck to her side!

I don't know if I should risk taking it off, and if I did, where I should put it. I'm thinking about cleaning around it, and leaving it. What do you think?

You should take it off.
The glue used on just about anything sticky is unstable and often acidic - it my well cause (or have already caused) discoloration of the plastic below.  Get a sheet of sticker paper from some other stickers to put it on for safe keeping, or a special sticker "book".  Be very gentle when prying it off, because the plastic is quite stretchy.  If you pull to hard on a corner you'll distort it.  Normally I heat up stickers under a desk lamp for a bit to make them easier to lift.

And maybe Goo Gone (or Goof Off?) to get rid of the sticker residue left on the pony?
Thank you Thimble for my amazingly cute avatar!

I'd try Goo Gone for any sticky leftovers - Goof Off specifically says it isn't intended for plastics, if I remember correctly from reading the label.  Goo Gone is much kinder, I've used it on plastics without ill effects (recommend washing off any residue with dish soap and water though.)

Thanks! That was very informative! It's so far the only vintage pony sticker I have, but it couldn't hurt to start a little sticker sheet or book as long as I can keep it somewhere where it won't get lost.

Maybe I'll tuck it into my box for Princess Glittering Gem. It should be safe in there. I don't really have a dedicated accessory box yet, but I should.

As it happens I do have a bottle of Goo Gone-- I picked one up when I first started collecting and restoring. :)

Sadly I have a Sweet Stuff who had her body sticker still attached as well, and has a huge patch of "age spot" where it used to be underneath in the shape of the sticker.     Poor girl.  I hope your Morning Glory fares better.  Tape and glue truly are the bane of any archivist.  Don't get me started on staples!

I'm glad you said this about Goof Off! Thanks.

I was using itand hated it. The Goof Off label says they have 2 other versions that work well with Goof Off2 and Goof Off Citrus. I got this new solvent that works well and smells good from Biokleen called Citrus Soy Solvent.

Yes I would certainly agree with delicately taking the sticker off of her...simply due to what the degrading glue on the sticker could do to the plastic. I have used a very very gentle heat to remove a flat sticker in the past from a playset - they are rather "elastic" in nature and unfortunately heat makes that even worse but equally heat is the best bet to melt the glue. I used a hair dryer on "warm" rather than hot and I "slid" the sticker off rather than peeled it off [I really hope that makes sense!]. And then when the glue was still melted I popped the sticker on to a little piece of card stock.

Good luck!

Hooray, the sticker came off! It is undamaged, and the plastic underneath will look fine once the gunk is off.

That's great!!! I'm so glad you were able to save the sticker, and the pony was undamaged.
