The Dollhouse / Re: Barbie Extra!

I don't think the pets go well with the dolls.

Yeah, the pets are just odd. Some additional accessories or articulation would have been a better use of the budget.

I couldn’t stand the earrings. Her hair kept getting tangled in them and they were just way too long. So I did remove them. They had to be broken to do it, unfortunately, but they’re out and she’s so much the better for it.

After a harrowing unboxing of #4 I can confirm articulated wrists. I don’t know why Mattel can’t find a better way to package dolls... Plastic ties, elastic bands, double-sided tape. It’s an obstacle course to free the doll.

I was really hoping to be able to get rid of #4’s big earrings but the posts are huge and don’t want to easily come out. Plus the holes in her head are quite large. Bummer.

Other than that, she’s a really nice doll.

My wife likes them and has several (thanks to Strawberry Shortcake she’s a sucker for dolls with little pets). The line does seem to be winding down though. On the plus side, you can get some good deals now. We’ve seen them at Five Below lately.

So I got the last few supplies I needed and finished up her instrument...

I wanted to do something different from Raya’s drums and not attached to the doll stand. I’m calling it a “percussive synthesizer” as it’s a portable, electronic drum kit that can be programmed with different sounds. For example, one drum pad could be a snare drum, one pad bass, and another a cymbal. I figure the world of Jem is a bit ahead of its time as far as tech, so why not. I wanted to capture the look of the original Misfits’ guitars with the sparkly stickers. The kit can attach around her body via the elastic band and she can use drum sticks (marching band-style) or she can hold it in one arm and use her other hand (bongo-style). The drumsticks fit well in the left hand but have to balance in the right.

I think I can call her done now.

Thank you for the kind words. As I mentioned, she’s my first custom. I’d love to do another but I don’t know if I want to tackle such a project again (especially rerooting, ugh).

Ruckus now has some shoes and I’m working on her drum kit. I was inspired by Raya’s drums but wanted to do something different. I’m liking how it’s looking but it still needs some finishing touches.

Still thinking about drumsticks... Don’t want to just use Raya’s. Plus the right hand is more open than the left so anything that fits well in one hand won’t fit well in the other. The sticks may need to have handles/clips like Barbie accessories...

Again, thanks for the kind words and I will hopefully post pics of finished drums by the end of this week.

How about the “SpacePop” doll line...? I only have the one doll (Juno) but I’ve been tempted by some of the others.

The Dollhouse / Ruckus - Custom Jem Doll
« on: July 12, 2019, 03:44:33 PM »
So I thought I’d share the results of my first ever attempt at making a custom doll. I have to say that it has been a real adventure and it was quite nerve-wracking at times.

Some background: Last year I finished collecting all the original Jem dolls (each of the adult characters plus Synergy, not yet interested in the Starlight girls). While I was happy to have the whole group, I was also wondering “Well, what do I do now? There’re no dolls left.” :(

I found a few Kenner Darci dolls and started to think about the idea of making a custom Jem doll. I knew I wasn’t going to attempt any face painting so I’d have to use the factory Darci face paint. Since this meant I really couldn’t make an actual character from the series I decided to make an original character.

I chose orange hair as it was a color absent from the Jem doll line and to make a Misfit because I adore the Misfits. I did my first ever reroot and what a process that was! As it was my first time I did a simple ponytail reroot (and none of the Misfits rock a ponytail so that worked for me). My gosh, rerooting is exhausting and frustrating but I’m mostly happy with the results.

The dress is from the Mego Cher doll line I believe. It was full length so I cut it down. I think the color and style of the dress are very Misfit-esque. The belt I made from some ribbon and trim. Simple ribbon in the hair. One Misfit bracelet for now (I may look for something unique for her) and I think I’ll be giving her a pair of Jerrica’s blue shoes.

The makeup was a stumper since she had to have makeup and I didn’t want to venture into painting. So I used temporary tattoos. The lightning bolt on her right cheek, the star on her left cheek, the blue above her eyes and the lines above her left eye are all temporary tattoos. They went on really easily and I think they look great.

So in my head, she’s Lisa “Ruckus” Brooks, the Misfits’ mysteriously absent drummer (I always thought it was odd that they added a saxophonist to the band rather than a drummer, no offense Jetta, love ya Jetta).

So here she is...

Thanks for the info and the confirmation, Taffeta! I have been to the Prancetron site but it (along with others) lists her shoes as being gray while my pair only look gray from certain angles and the predominant color impression is purple. The shoes are now on her feet and she is finally (after several years) complete. She was my first doll but one of the last to be finished off. Thanks again!

The Dollhouse / Vintage Pizzazz Shoes ID
« on: December 24, 2018, 10:05:51 AM »
My Pizzazz has been without her shoes since I found her at the flea market several years ago. Now I think I found a pair of her shoes but I'm not sure. They are definitely first year pumps but they are more lavender/purple than gray. That said, they don't seem to match any of the other first year pumps that are more definitively purple. They seem to have an iridescence to them. I've read that there is variation in the coloring of her shoes. Can anyone here confirm or deny these as Pizzazz's shoes? The color is hard to really capture in photos (which may be why I can't seem to really match them to the photos I've seen) but I've got two angles below. Thanks!

The holes on the bottom also made me think of bubble bath/shampoo but I had no luck finding anything that matched. They are very similar to items in the Lady Lovelylocks doll line but again, nothing matches. They're cute and my wife is happy to add them to her collection but we're really curious as to exactly what they are.

Wal-Mart does stock Lanard products but I've yet to see the Jurassic Clash sets there. The only place I've seen them in the wild is those "Go" calendar and game seasonal stores that show up in shopping malls.

Can anyone help ID this mystery pair of animals? They are each marked "(C) 1987 TCFC TAIWAN" and are about 2.5-3 inches tall. I'm assuming the TCFC means "Those Characters From Cleveland" but I cannot ID them despite my best Google search efforts. Thanks in advance!

It's a Lanard Pony Tale - specifically Mermaida.  I have the full set pictured in my non-MLP sales thread if you want to see what they all look like.

Thanks for the ID, Breyer600! I checked out the pic you mentioned and they're all really cool (the horses anyway, not so sure about the tiny people they come with). I'm familiar with Lanard's boy-targeted stuff but I've never seen these. Thanks again!

We found this mystery merpony at the thrift store. It's not MLP but it is made of decent quality plastic. It has no manufacturing markings. Can anyone ID this for us? Are there any others in whatever line it's from? Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Mods, if this would be better in the Toy Box section, please toss it over there.

Introductions / Hello MLP Arena
« on: February 17, 2017, 04:06:37 PM »
Hello! I'm glad to be making my first post here. I joined up for two reasons:

1) My wife is a big MLP collector but hasn't joined any forums. I'm a member of several forums related to my collecting interests and find them to be fantastic resources. But she's just not the forum type (at least not yet anyway). So I'm hoping to be her bridge to the forum world.

2) As my own collecting interests have widened I'm finding that my usual haunts can't always help me with questions or join me in discussion. For example, I've started collecting the old Jem line and I'm hoping there are some folks with similar interests here.

In addition to the Jem doll line and fantastic cartoon, my likes include Star Wars (and the old Kenner line), Transformers, comics, Korra, Power Rangers, giant monsters, giant robots, Popples and much more. While I no longer own any ponies myself, I did have Firefly as a kid.

I thought I'd choose another 80's horse for my screen name as On-X was always my favorite part of "Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer." (I still wish they had made an On-X toy.)

I've been to two My Little Pony Fairs and found them to be fun experiences. I look forward to becoming a part of this community. Thanks for having me!
