Pony Corral / MLP Socks at Dollar General
« on: May 08, 2014, 04:28:53 PM »
A few days ago, someone here mentioned that they had Pony socks over at Dollar General. After looking at a couple of stores, I was able to find some today. For anyone curious, they're in a bin with socks with other licensed characters, but a separate one from the children's socks. Just look for the MLP logo.

As you might be able to tell by the designs, they're aimed at an older audience than the ones you might see at other stores like Target. And they definitely fit adults (as a matter of fact, I'm wearing the Pinkie ones now). They're a little thin, but they are quite comfortable.  Another plus is that they only go up to the ankle, so if you want to wear something with ponies on it, but want to be discreet about it, no one will be the wiser unless you take your shoes off.

And, finally, they're just a dollar a pair. If they had something like this at Hot Topic, they'd probably charge you four times as much, so this is probably the best deal on pony socks that adults can actually wear. I do wish I could get some Twilight ones though...

Pony Corral / Re: How did you play with your ponies?
« on: May 08, 2014, 01:49:21 PM »
I didn't play with ponies, and I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only one in the pony forums who didn't, haha...

I didn't have ponies in my childhood too. I feel a little bad when they are only for display/customizing purpouses, so sometimes I grab them and reenact a story I want to write with them XD *woman-child mode ON*

I didn't have any ponies growing up either.  When I was little I mostly played with cars, and I had this really cool train set that I used to make the two trains crash into each other. It's a bit strange in retrospect that I never played with any kind of girl's toy as a kid, and now I collect them. But what can I say, I just love cute things.

I don't mind it that much, since it's somewhat closer to her S1 design, which I prefer to her current look, not to mention the toys are really cute. I guess it's for the same reason Celestia was made pink, to get her in a girlier color so kids would buy them. Still, there'll probably be a much more accurate Luna figure for older MLP fans, due to her overwhelming popularity in the fandom. I'll bet the first Princess (besides Twilight) Funko releases will be Luna, so at least you have that.

It's not really that weird, but I have a few ponies that I have styled, and most of those I used a boil perm.  So I was more or less standing at the stove holding a pony toy with tongs over a pot of boiling water.  Not weird, really, but it would make for an awkward explanation should someone else come into the room.

Pony Corral / Re: Ponies bringing people together?
« on: May 07, 2014, 01:13:19 PM »
I've actually met a lot of new people thanks to this fandom.  I don't really have much contact with my old high school friends (although I have seen my best friend from high school recently for the first time in years), and there aren't too many people my age in any of my classes, so I didn't really have many ways to meet new people.

When there was a big meetup group map featured on EqD, I saw two within driving distance of me, one in Charleston and one in Charlotte. Since the one in Charlotte was closer, I joined their Facebook group and went to my first meetup last April.

I remember it pretty well. It wasn't actually as eventful as some of the others I went to, but when me and a couple of other people were in my car going from the mall to a park, I turned on my iPod, and I asked them "Do you like Heavy Metal? Because that's pretty much all that's on here." and they said "Oh, yeah."  Then, on the way over, there was this Megadeth song that came on, and the guy in the passenger seat started singing along, and I even joined in later on.  Basically, when the day was over, I had a feeling that I was going to be good friends with these people.

Now, I know part of that has to do with a common taste in music, but I still never would have met these guys if it wasn't for MLP.

Pony Corral / Re: Favorite G3 character
« on: May 07, 2014, 12:32:25 PM »
My favorite G3 character is Zipzee, and pretty much the only G3 toy I actually want (though that may change).  Her whole allergic to flowers schtick got old fast, but she's still pretty cute.  That, and she's voiced by Andrea Libman.  I also like Thistlewhistle, again because her whistle thing is really cute.

The biggest one for me is not being able to find any of the old Mane 6 Fashion Styles anywhere.  There are still a couple of the Celestia and Luna ones around, the former of which I want to get soon, but nothing older than that.  I do wish I had bought them when I had the chance, but then I didn't really want Fashion Styles (with the exception of the Pinkie Pie's Boutique one), due to the price and the size.

Pony Corral / Re: How many ponies have 'Dazzle' in their names?
« on: May 03, 2014, 08:42:11 AM »
I think they just add 'Dazzle' to the name so that they can copyright the pony. Other names must be too generic or not be available to copyright so you end up with names like 'Twist-a-loo' and 'Snailsquirm'. That's just my guess, though.

Yes, I have the white plastic version on sale at my Shapeways shop. The full color version is not, since I'd like to make some changes to the design.

as soon as Easter was over all those bagged ponies were gone.. I think they took them back to the warehouse portion of Walmart because there is no way that the ponies all could have been bought that quickly in my area in the span of 2 ot 3 days.. All I saw was Rarity on the pegs the other day with the rest of the normal G4s =/ I was tempted to scan her to see what the price scanner said she was

At Walmart, they're $2.99.

Out of all the stuff they showed at the NY Toy Fair, I am looking forward to this the most. Primarily because it's the closest thing I'll get (in terms of official merchandise, at least) to Heavy Metal Ponies. Sure, the designs for some don't work as well as others, but RD, Celestia, and Pinkie I'm really liking.

Pre-G4 I miiiiiiight have considered it but would be worried for the same reasons Thunderwing mentions.  People seem to think one is rich when you collect stuff, no matter what it is.

Now, though, considering the general public's opinion of "The Bronies" and all the negative thoughts that have come out of that, I have pretty much stopped telling anyone that I collect MLP unless they specifically ask, "Do you collect something?"   I certainly would never associate myself publically and on the internet with my personal life.

Most of the hate towards Bronies tends to be online, and even then it's not as much as you would think, at least in my experience. I've never had anyone give me or my friends crap for it when we'd have meetups at public places. And I've never had anything bad aimed specifically at me at any of the sites I visit where they know I like MLP. (That said, I still wish to keep this from as many people as possible.)

In response to the OP, I wouldn't do anything that would make you feel too uncomfortable,  but I would consider if the money is worth the potential embarrassment. If it's for a small paper, there probably won't be any negative comments on it.

I remember hearing from the cashier at Build a Bear when I got Sweetie Belle that Zecora was next. Looks like she was right. They all look absolutely adorable, AJ in particular. Guess this gives me more reason to start working on some shelves.

Actually, it is available in White Flexible Plastic, but it will need to be painted. For that matter, I have ordered one such model for someone else (the 3D Printing service I use doesn't ship to PO Boxes), but If I don't get any response from them after I get it, I can sell it to you.

It looks really great! I was super tempted by it on ebay, I do wish the wheels turned though

I decided against making it with rolling wheels early on.  If the wheels move, it makes it more of a pain to keep it still, and I wouldn't want one of these rolling off of a shelf. Plus, designing a setup for rolling wheels within the constraints of the material would have been a huge pain.
