Pony Corral / Re: Who would you keep and why?
« on: May 01, 2013, 01:25:20 PM »
1.  Minty, who was my childhood favourite.
2.  So Soft Fifi who was my favourite unicorn.
3.  TAF Yum-Yum who was my favourite pegasus.
4.  Honeysuckle who was my favourite flutter pony.
5.  Baby Half Note who was my favourite baby pony.
6.  Baby Frosting who was my favourite baby unicorn.
7.  Baby Surprise who was my favourite baby pegasus.
8.  4-Speed who was my favourite big brother.
9. and 10.  Milkweed and Tumbleweed who were my favourite twins.

...dammit, I wanted to put some of the great UK ponies I got as an adult, or some of the G1s I wanted as a kid but never got until I was a grownup, but....yeah, my childhood "Greatest hits list" takes all 10 spots.

The Dollhouse / Re: Why I know I will NEVER get tired of Monster High
« on: April 30, 2013, 11:55:54 AM »
I used to love Bratz, particularly the funky, edgy, creative fashions with the little details.  Unfortunately in the last few years Bratz changed and not for the better.  The clothing got cheaper and less creative; now that they have changed the size of the dolls, I'm done.

Fortunately right around that time Monster High came out and had that sort of creative clothing, and especially creative characters, with clever names and distinctive personalities!

I really appreciate that Monster High seems to respect its characters.  They take the time to create personalities, they make more than one version of most of their characters (with the most likely candidates for here-then-gone being characters like Cupid and HooDude and even THEY got webisode time).  And I like using my imagination to create my own monsters. :)

I love the mint hair.  I like the swirl pattern on her legs but I thought it was grey or purple, if it's an icky green I may steal some lace arm warmers and black knee socks from my Bratz and cover it up.

Sea Monster:  Calla C'tulu

Witch:  Gingerbread Haus

Vampire Girl:  Farrah Nosferatu

Gargoyle Boy:  Petros Stone

Skeleton:  Donna de los Muertas

Bee:  Beetrice Honeycutt

Dragon:  Ruby Wyvern

And then I mixed Cat Girl and Dragon to make a Mishipizhiw, named Meesha Pishu.

There are some poses I don't really like, but if the pony has pretty colours or an interesting symbol, pose isn't a dealbreaker for me.

Pony Corral / Re: Missing My Little Pony Collecting
« on: April 24, 2013, 05:22:34 AM »
There are times over a year goes by without my getting another pony....but I still love the collection I have.  Collecting is not about buying.  Collecting is about loving ponies.  I think sometimes as collectors we can mistake "getting stuff" for "enjoying our collection" and those aren't the same thing.  I also think you were wise to curb your collecting when you had less free spending money.

Pony Corral / Re: fim trading cards serries 2, what do you think?!

I got these, this weekend!  I didn't realize they were such a new release that there wasn't a check list online.  I'd been looking for one!  Thanks for posting links to what they all look like.

Part of me sees a lot of duplicate characters (ie mane six, CMC) and obscure characters - the other part of me notes that I LOVE obscure characters!  And I like seeing scenes from Season 3 as well.  I just hope they hold back until at least next year to launch any future card sets, in order to have enough TV episodes to support them.

Pony Corral / Re: Insured your collection?
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:53:52 AM »
Once my toy collection's value passed $1000 my insurance adjuster recommended it be insured separately as a collection rather than be rolled into "household items" given the valuable nature of some of the contents.  I think I pay an extra $20-ish on premiums each year.  I have taken pictures of everything I own to prove I have it.

The good news is, my policy states that I am paid for *the cost of replacing the item*.  So, if the item increases in value, if it costs the company more to buy me a new one, than it cost for me to buy the first one, they eat the difference.  The downside is I can't decide to buy something different with the insurance money.  I get what I lost, no more, no less.  The pictures are what helps them determine what I have.

Snapdragon, when I played by myself I loved natural-disaster stories too.  My favourite was "Flood" because all the ponies would have to find pony furniture to stand on so they could float over the flood.

In grade 6 we had Collections Day.  Kids were asked to bring in a sample of their collections to display on a table on the back of the class.  I was not getting as many ponies then (my parents were starting to get reluctant to buy me toys any more, and that was Pony year 6/7, when there were so many different kinds of ponies coming out, and I had only so much allowance, and FashionStar Fillies were competing for my attention) - but I still had over a hundred ponies and figured that would be the most impressive collection I could bring.  I brought in about 25 ponies, like one so-soft, one twinkle-eye, one flutter, etc.  My dad said I shouldn't take my favourites in case they got stolen, so I didn't.  But none did.

LOVED the story about Buttons on the sea wall.

My second cousin lived out of province but came to stay with her grandpa every summer.  Her grandpa was my grandma's little brother and they lived in the same neighborhood.  So basically for me it was like having a friend come every summer to play.  Every year we would make up a different enemy for the ponies.  There were dragons, witches, and wolf-cats.  At the start of the summer the new enemy would try to take over Ponyland and spend the summer coming up with nefarious schemes and traps.  Right before my cousin went home they would be defeated for the last time.  Our ponies also did fashion shows.

When I was very little I used to set up a series of jumps and do a horse show with ribbons from the Show stable for the best jumper.  The ponies would dress up in pony wear for the show.

One of my school friends was more into dolls so we did a game where my ponies ran the Paradise Estate as a hotel, her ponies ran the Perm Shoppe as a beauty parlor and her sister's ponies ran the Sweet Shoppe as a restaurant and our ponies went to patronize each other's businesses.

My mom's best friend's son agreed to play ponies with me, but he liked to play ponies with more of a cops and robbers type bent - mafia ponies trying to steal Majesty's crown, royal guard ponies trying to stop them.  Also, Cobra laid siege to the Dream Castle, but the pegasus ponies allied with GI Joe to save the day.

When I was in Grade 4 the My Little Pony movie came out.  I lived in an isolated farming community and it was a two hour drive into the city to find a theatre that was showing it.  I invited my best friend to come with me and afterwards my mom took us to Toys R Us (also something we didn't have in our area) and bought each of us a set of Pony Wear (that stores in our area weren't carrying).  I got the City Kids outfit.  I don't remember what my friend got.

Off Topic / Re: How is your eyesight?

My vision is abysmal, like 20/300.  I have worn glasses since fourth grade.  Contacts squick me out, so I don't wear them.  I've had a few photos taken of me with my glasses off and I honestly like how I look with them on, far better.

I got a Timex Ironman when I worked for the military and feel naked without it.  This thing has been frozen outside in -40 temperatures for a weekend (on my wrist on outdoor survival exercise), under water, in aircraft, chucked around and abused for almost 20 years and it's still going.

According to the battery place the thing is ancient, and when I replace the band they have to cut it special because that size isn't made anymore.  Half the words are worn off the buttons and it's scratched but...it keeps perfect time.

Value for money indeed.
