Wanted! / Re: Tails
« on: September 14, 2021, 02:19:21 AM »
Matching tails to G1 ponies is much more difficult than it seems as G1 pony hair fades more or less over time (remember that they are 30 - 40 years old now).
Cyprus does not have a doll hair retailer right. The next ones are located in UK. And it's not guaranteed that if you order there the hair will match your ponies. What you can try is to send the ponies to someone, who's giving them the new tails and send them back to you because also photo matching is not always a 100% match (experiences from a 16 years actively collector, who also restores ponies and has about 2kg of spare tails ;) ). If you're interested I live in Germany and can try my best to give your ponies new tails. Send me a PM if you like.

My only worry is she's already had a fullbody repaint!! So I'm not sure I'll be able to boil her head. :(

Ah that was an info we didn't have before. Then a hair dryer would work too (hopefully).

Customs / Re: matte or glossy mod podge?
« on: July 21, 2021, 06:48:21 AM »
I used ModPodge matte all the years and then? Ponies got sticky over time, symbols tend to start bleeding and eye colors started to merge so the eye of one of my customs I purchased is now all red which wasn't when I purchased her.
I can only recommend DuraClear UltraMatte from Americana and I am in Germany, so t's not easy to get this stuff but it's 100% doing its job, even with an airbrush I can easily apply it.

I think it's like the BBE, you soften up their heads and push on the bulbs until the eyes pop out!

Exactly what tailrustedleaf said is the thing to do. Giving this lady's head a really hot bath and you can pop them out. However getting them back in is a nightmare and I never managed to do this. So I filled the holes and replaced them with swarovski crystals.

Customs / Re: How Much Hair??
« on: July 12, 2021, 01:26:54 AM »
As I have answered your question in another thread yet:

The amount of hair clearly depends on different factors:

- the planned length of your ponies' mane and tail

- the amount you get from the seller you like to order from

- the amount of mane plugs and the size of the tail hole

- your rehairing experience i.e. "beginner" vs. "advanced" (i.e. how you cut the hair, how much hair you use for each mane plug, etc.)

- the plastic status of your pony (soft plastic ponies can be rehaired easier than hard plastic ponies, where it's possible to loose some hair)

You might want to check out this thread for any information about further hair suppliers http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,401611.0.html.

I have no experiences in G4 ponies but if you want to rehair a regular G3 pony with its regular length, then 1 hank of any doll hair supplier should work. For these ponies, I cut a 38" length hank in quarter.

Customs / Re: Doll Hair Guide for Customs
« on: July 09, 2021, 12:27:52 AM »
I've been trying to find out how much hair I would need to re-root a pony, but everywhere says vastly different amounts. Is there a difference between the different generations as to how much I need? How much would I need for a g3, vs a g4?

That clearly depends on different factors:

- the planned length of your ponies' mane and tail

- the amount you get from the seller you like to order from

- the amount of mane plugs and the size of the tail hole

- your rehairing experience i.e. "beginner" vs. "advanced" (i.e. how you cut the hair, how much hair you use for each mane plug, etc.)
Just to name an example: I work with doll hair since 15 years and can easily use only 1 G1 Pony tail to rehair an entire G1 pony's mane if necessary. But that takes a lot of practice and experience.

- the plastic status of your pony (soft plastic ponies can be rehaired easier than hard plastic ponies)

To make things easier,  you might like to tell about what you plan to do and people can help from there.

One of the new shops include Shimmerlocks (shimmerlocks.com ) which has super-fast shipping, and great contact if you have questions or concerns on the colors! She's very active and responsive on Facebook and Instagram! She also offers tinsel, which is a novelty among hair suppliers, and although her color range isn't very wide yet, she's still very new, and so more hair colors will be coming I'm sure. She also offers fun packs, like 'G1 first year rainbow' packs, and offers color matches for many popular ponies!

Another lovely shop (new to me!) is TheDollyVerse (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheDollyverse ) which has a lot of lovely nylon colors much like you'd get from Dollyhair or Shimmerlocks, with fast shipping, and lovely to chat to! When I ordered a color, she told me she'd found out suddenly that it had the tendency to stain, so she refunded me and still sent me the hanks anyway to see if I could fix the staining issue! She doesn't have any pony matches listed, but her hair is lovely and soft, and I'm excited to work with it!

Like everyone here mentioned, there's also TheDollPlanet (https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheDollPlanetHair ) which is an awesome shop, also very responsive to messages and the like, and offers lots of great hair types you can't get anywhere else, like fluffy, microbraids, S-curl, GITD and ringlets! However, a lot of her hair is known as 'high temperature nylon', aka it won't take a cold curl, and it is very stiff. If you want pony-identical nylon, you will probably need to find another store. She also sells lots of cool items, like a model stand, rehairing tools, and a craft saw!!

A cool returnee is CustomPony.com (now located at https://custompony.ecrater.com/ ), she was active during the earliest days I remember in the fandom, and she's recently returned! She sold off her old stock, and now she's listing new stuff! She ships fast, lovely to chat with, and her hair is also the same kind of nylon you'd find in MLPs. I haven't worked with the hair I bought from her yet, but I have heard some folks mentioning it's a little stiffer, and has more of a 'matte' finish than the average MLP does. I'll have to confirm that for myself once I start rehairing with it!

Since you're in the US I wouldn't recommend DHEmporium (formerly RetroDollsUK) only because shipping can be pretty pricey abroad! But it was worth paying the $20 shipping fee to get some of the awesome GITD colors she carries! She has the widest variety of colors in GITD AFAIK, as well as the typical lovely nylon shades! Here's her site! https://www.thedollhairemporium.co.uk/

There's also a lovely Australian hair supplier, CustomDollHairAU (https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/CustomDollHairAu ) who I haven't ordered from, but I've heard glowing reviews from my Aussie friends, and she is very active on Instagram!

A shop that I'm sad to say I can't recommend is Dolltress.com, because while I had one excellent purchase with them (fast shipping etc.), after I recommended them to BlackCurtains, she had to file a chargeback after the seller dropped all contact. :/ The seller may be going through a move right now, but that's when you close the shop temporarily, not just stop returning emails. (I had a friend also tell me, they ordered tinsel from both DollTress.com and Shimmerlocks, and DollTress charged more money for smaller packages of tinsel! :/ No bueno!) The same warning sadly goes for RetroDollsUS, they're having a lot of shipping delays recently (the shop is closed on their Etsy), with a flood of bad feedback to boot. I also unfortunately heard about some negative feedback they received in the past (more on the dolly side of things - slow shipping/didn't ship until the buyer complained, swap issues, etc.), so I wouldn't feel comfortable shopping from or recommending them either.

Phew! I think that's everyone! Let me know if there's anything else I can help clear up, it's been really cool seeing all of the new hair shops spring into being! Best of luck with your customizing!

That is a very good compilation of the suppliers. Please do not forget https://mylittlecustom.com/, a UK based seller with all the dollyhair colors available and additional Kiwi colors which are cheaper than regular nylon but still great to work with (Kiwi' falls in between Saran and Nylon - it's a finer fibre but doesn't have the same weight and slightly 'oily' feel of Saran). She has Saran too as well as special hair like glow in the dark, UV color change, etc. There's a new owner which is very active on FB and she's a sweetheart to talk to.

I've been mostly using The Doll Planet but I did have a successful order with DollyHair recently as well.  Somewhere around here I did a comparison of a few hair types from different brands.  I need to add CustomPony hair to it (It DOES have an interesting texture), and Shimmerlocks (I have yet to order from them).  Here it is: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,399945.0.html  My main struggle was finding a place that accurately matches their hair colors to G1 ponies.

I am in the process of creating a universal matching guide (currently with US/ EU G1 only) of each pony against the colors listed in MylittleWiki (http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/G1_Hair_Colors) but there're a lot of mistakes/ missings. The goal is to give each pony a match with these colors and once you know the right color, you switch to another sheet (it's created in excel) and see which supplier has a match for this wiki color and how it is called.
I just need to find somebody who's able to correct/ supplement wiki with my findings. Sadly the FB page dedicated to Missing Entries was a total flop and absol is not reachable here or via e-mail either.

Customs / Re: Can I dye these ponies?
« on: May 28, 2021, 01:30:14 AM »
Hrllo everyone,

I'm back with another dye question.

I have a blue hearts dazzlehlow who us more of a peach-ish colour then her original pink. She has her original hair and tail,  their slightly cut but it's no big deal.

I was wondering if I could dye her. What colours should should I use and stuff like that. If I should dye her at all? I don't want to ruin her, given she's so rare.

If you have advice, please let me know.

Cheers,

Luke

I think dyeing her would work well. You have a peach base color which includes yellow. When you dye her pink, it might not work on a precolored pony. If you want to get her a tad more pink - airbrushing her very slightly with pink would work and would not harm her body color. However it's not guaranteed it works either. And blue hearts Dazzleglow is indeed harder to come by. So maybe you like to sell her instead or leave her as she is? I bet she still is a beautiful girl.

Customs / Re: How to behead a secret surprise pony?
« on: May 28, 2021, 01:25:54 AM »
Thank you. Not opening her is preferable. Do I just push the cut hair back in?

Right, you need to cut it extremely short to the roots, then push it back inside with the blunt end of a needle for example. Then I rehair it (a tad different than usual but still with the tool method).

Their head/ body connection is a tad different but you open them like any other pony. Heat it up with hot water before and it shouldn't be a problem to get it off. The forelock can be restored without opening the pony at all if that is her only problem.

These are very well executed So Softs - it's great to see more people coming up with the electrostatic flocking gun.

These look very aestethic - how you arrange the hair for the pictures. I love the color combinations - very well done!
