Is it one of those transparent not too stretchy things? You could try replacing it with a similar hair "elastics". Those even come in different sizes.

Just gonna leave this here...

Pony Corral / Stains on G1 repros

Thrift store finds have been few in these parts, but on Monday we managed to find one of the recent G1 reproductions. Firefly's hair combed out just find, except for few strays, and the dirt on her was light, so she should do just fine for a display model; we already have a MIB copy stashed away.

However, because there has to be a however otherwise I wouldn't be posting, she has a stain on her back

which is suspiciously shaped, positioned, and colored like her ribbon's to blame. Before I cleaned up her tail and rearranged the ribbon, it was smashed flat and twisted 90º like it could have been pressed against the body when she was packaged.

Has anyone else seen discolorations where the ribbon might be the cause?

After giving a demonstration of my rather technical work of the last two weeks, the project manager asked “what is the business case for this?” Oh, just the foundation of the project, that’s all.

I got my DVDs on Wednesday and finished up the series over two nights. There were some fun episodes in there, and the ponies really did have personality. I can see why so many people here say Patch is their favorite, but I also liked Sweetheart and Bon Bon. With so few episodes, some characters just don't get much screen time, and it makes me wish there'd been a second season.

The animation, unfortunately, seems typical for the time, and the DVD transfer makes the whole thing look like it was filmed through a dirty fish tank. Perhaps if I was nostalgic for CRTs and VCRs I wouldn't mind, but...

And now, after hearing the theme song twenty-six times in a little over twenty-four hours, the damned thing is stuck in my head!

P.S. - Teddy is a jerk, and Sweetheart needs to ditch him before she ends up trapped in an abusive relationship!

OMG! I just bought a cel from "Up, Up and Away" this weekend with Bon Bon from about the 5:06 mark. There were a ton of them from that episode in a slippery heap on a table, and this was the one I liked best because it had a full character in an active pose.

I have a few cels from the show too. They always seem to pop up at our local ComicCon and they’re like, $5 a piece so I just buy a different one every couple years.

I now I know I paid WAY too much!

You probably didn’t pay too much! :) I think a good part of what drives an animations cels worth is if it’s a good frame! My cheap ones were weird kind of in between frames and not super interesting. :P I have one really nice set of clover frames from her dance number in “Send in the Clown” that I paid much more for. I’d argue that maybe I overpaid for those, but it went to charity so it’s okay! From what I’m hearing it sounds like you guys got some really nice frames Bronycon that came from more popular episodes, so they would definitely have more worth.

Thanks for the moral support! I order the DVD of the episodes so I can do a positive ID of the image, then I want to see how well I can hack up a background to go with the cel for display. If I don't post a "brag" pic in six months, send me a PM!

There were some odd looking cels there, like ponies without faces, and heads entirely missing, for combination with overlays. I know this has been done for years, but to see the artifacts sure was creepy.

In a quick watch of "Up, up and away", there were a lot of frames from it there, perhaps that was the only one. I'll have to look for more stuff like this to make into "projects"!

PS: I do plan on watching everything, not just the one. Hope I have as much fun as I've had with the G3 episodes.

Figures that were more show-like than others, so Funko (regular colors) and blind bags, but only if the pose was unique, like in the sets. It took a while, but I finally warmed up to brushables. And for somebody who said he'd never collect EQG, the seven minis staring at me from the desk are calling me a liar.

Oof, the nostalgia! I had her when I was small, she's a Bella Sara horse!

Thanks! Never heard of them.

The baby has a magnet in her snout so they can nuzzle!

Looks like the mom has one too.

Yesterday, at our favorite thrift store, my wife found this very determined looking ballerina:

Her head swings freely while her neck has a return spring. When pressed, it produces the effect that she's bowing, or perhaps just grazing.

Her mane contains another thread like for a second decoration, and there may be the remains of a third in her tail.

There's a single part number on her belly, but no manufacture name, date, or country of origin.

Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Pony Corral / Re: How close are you to completing your collection?

Wait... you can complete a collection of ponies‽ Of anything‽

Part of the fun of collecting for me is the search. Completion would mean the end of the fun. Fortunately, I can't even glimpse the collecting horizon from where I'm at. I keep learning, seeing new things, and branching out, so I've got plenty of fun ahead.

On the other hand, size doesn't make a community or a convention.

Decidedly not. Bigger ≠ better, but there's a relationship to profit, or at least breaking even.

That said, it's not uncommon in the current day and age for fandoms to be like that. It happens with anime series, it happens with other shows and things. It's more of a 'now' generation than a 'past stuff' generation and I suppose if fans move on to a new medium there's not really a place for that.

Now, I won't be around to see it unless I end up as a Futurama-like head in a jar, but I've got an inkling that some of the folk who fell in (and later out) of love with G4 will be back. One day there will be a revival, or they'll see something at a sale or on TV (or what passes for it in the future), and it will all come rolling back. I hope there's a solid multigenerational fandom waiting for them, and with a bit of age, or dare I say wisdom, they'll drop some of their prejudices. If not, what was the loss?

I really hope you are right about the hardcore people, but I remain healthily sceptical.

Can't fault you there!

PS - I am not a Pollyanna, honest. One of the things I've got out of pony is hope for a better future, and I'll be damned if my intrinsic personality is gonna screw that up!

I don't really understand stopping a convention because the series is ending. If that happened in other pony areas there'd never have been a ponycon or a pony fair, as they all BEGAN after MLP ended.

The reason is attendance numbers and venue. The Baltimore Convention Center is just huge, and attendance peaked at 10,011 in 2015, their third year in Baltimore (first year we went) and has been steadily declining since. Last year's attendance was down to 5,465, and on Saturday night by around 10㏘ I felt like I was rattling around in the place in comparison to previous years. Sunday morning was the same.

At one point, someone suggested to me that BronyCon would be dissolved to break any contracts they have with the Baltimore Convention Center, because they knew they couldn't make the numbers to cover the cost. This person suggested they might reform elsewhere under a different name.

Even if that is the case, many of the US cons have ended or are ending. The personal investment in organizing these must be taxing, and many of the staff are hitting midlife with lots of personal responsibilities, even if they are still whippersnappers compared to me! After eight to ten years, some of them are, I am sure, exhausted.

Quote
I really want to see things integrate more but in my view it has to begin with accepting that other generations exist besides G4. In a way, bronycon could probably continue to exist if it did that - but if it isn't interested in that kind of angle, it's unlikely G5 will make a difference.

Things are somewhat integrated (I'm here, my son is a G2 enthusiast, my wife is a compulsive pony thrifter) and will continue to integrate, especially for those who are interested in products and the history of the franchise.

Quote
I am rather expecting the hardcore bronies to react violently against G5. Even more so if it turns out it's not a new concept but a rehash of their G4 characters.

I hate to tell you, but many that I would have considered "hardcore" are long gone, having lost interest in the show around 2016 or 2017, and few that I knew of collected mass produced items; they tended towards fan made items. Some who "react violently" and are still around aren't going to change regardless if G4 was in season 17 or G6 was on the horizon. TBH, I don't know why they hang around when anything and everything makes them unhappy.

But I'm WAY off topic now...

I'll tell you what will make me happy: heading to the vendor hall and searching vendors with G1 through 3 items. That and after HOURS of standing in line, having Ms. Zacherle sign our "Art of Equestria" where we collect our autographs.
